Had a similar problem with the check engine light on my 96 Jetta (also OBD I). Ended up being an internal fault in my distributor. Problem usually happened when accelerating on highway on ramps at around 50 mph. You should definitely get it scanned though - especially since the distributor is kind of expensive (about $250 US). |

Ed52 thanks for the detailed info. I would try it but i still cant find the damn access port. looked beside the ash tray and theirs a cig lighter port. Above the ash tray i found a couple of blank out caps next to the switches /def/ ac etc. popped those out did not find any access plug!!! Should it be in plain sight or do i have to dig around inthose holes? Thanks everyone for info. I'm not giving up

The easiest way to get to the port is to remove the ashtray and then slide the blank above the cigarette lighter to the left. |
