Re: Jetta IVMade the Least reliable List (NjDude75)

I think its kinda funny how I can sell VW people these cars and they know this stuff but when it comes to a chevy person there is no way I can get them out of there crapalier and into a new golf with free insuriance. Consumor reports stats normaly take about 4 years to turn around. 2000 was a really ****y year for VW on that platform

Re: Jetta IVMade the Least reliable List (NatroVR6)

I don't get how ppl come up with this ****. GM has had recalls this year for sticky accelerators, fires in steering column. Dodge had wheels falling off. Ford is an absolute joke, getting 2/5 stars on safety on most of their cars. How does VW get all this bad press?
It's not new news. You got engines seizing from sluge, coil packs, MAFs, 02 sensors, heated seats catching fire, airbags suddenly deploying...the list goes on.
Here's the fact: All cars have problems. No matter which brand you go with, you will have something crappy happen. Some are more expensive to fix than others. This is a really good argument to go with domestics. Since they all break, might as well get the cheapest one to fix. However, I find that domestic/asian cars are very flaky in construction. My VW, although it has it's problems, is probably the most solid car I've ever owned. That's enough to keep my loyalty to the brand. VW is in deep, and they know it. Things will turn around.

Re: Jetta IVMade the Least reliable List (cjoseph82)

There is a logical explaination to why the lists show all those Japanese cars as reliable and the VW's as unreliable. To fill out the survey, you need to stop driving your car. The only VW drivers that fill out the survey are those with broken cars and can't drive them. Whereas the Japanese vehicle drivers are happy to stop driving there cars (probably looking for an excuse) to fill out a survey.
**Disclaimer: Before you flame me for hating other cars I did look at an Acura TL before getting my GLI.....

Ooooooo... I need ointment, fast. What a burn. I love how you actually agreed with the list. They didn't say just engines you know. Quirky cars are better anyway.

Re: Jetta IVMade the Least reliable List (24fps)

Move along people. Nothing to see here.
Hey, anyone for suggesting the addition of a separate "no-holds-barred, fight-to-the-death 1.8t vs. VR6 forum"? No posts allowed if they don't pertain to the good vs. evil struggle between fanatics on both sides of these two engines?
And no technical data of any kind may be used. Only flaming and snaps and playground insults will be tolerated.
Three-drink minimum before logging on.
I think it's got promise.

I too will chime in with some 1.8T hate...

I saw an article about this on CNN Money. They were talking about the Golf/Jetta/Passat turbocharged cars.
2.0/TDI/VR6 owns jooo!

Re: Jetta IVMade the Least reliable List (ThunderChicken)

The Toyota thing is funny. I used to have a 2000 Celica GTS. Fun car! Handled like it was on rails with no body roll. Great gas milage too. I got from Denver to Chicago on 27 Gallons of gas, had the cruise control st 80-85 for most of the trip.
Got a 2000 GLX last June. A lease return that only had 40k on it.
I love this thing! It may not handle as well as that Celica did but its quieter, quicker and I'm not as paranoid that I'm gonna get run over by one of those oversized Stupid Utility Vehicles.
Had several problems on that Celica ranging from valve clacking (my own fault. that engine sounded great at 8500rpm). Belt tensioners, CD player would just randomly quit for a while, clutch needed adjusting alot, mostly stuff like that. As fun as it was, it didnt have much personality. Most of my friends thought it felt pretty sterile.
So far with my Jetta, I had to replace the drive belt and the Climatronic managed to commit suicide and had to replace a few motors in it.
Great car so far! I'm very glad I got it!
