Okay, I haven't found this problem addressed, so I'm gonna thread the bad boy. I thought it was an exhaust leak, but it seems to be coming from the fuel pump. Sounds exactly like air hissing out of something. Very strange. Car runs just fine (Window Licker took good care of it). Any ideas?

Re: Fuel pump hissing (Fox2112)

Yup, I always figured it was just when I did the exaust I didn't get it on tight enough. But sure enough we went down there and it was one of those pumps. I didn't get out my stethascope. . . I figure it's a sign of future problems but. . .

How loud is it hissing? If you have quiet exahust, you may be able to hear it running even if your filter and in tank pump are fine. If it is just audiable above the exahust, espically if its cold outside, it may not be a big deal.

Re: Fuel pump hissing (BillLeBob)

By filter it, you mean change the out of tank filter or pump? Or should I just let it go until I'm stranded near some rundown farmhouse and the some crazy farmer wants me to impregnate his daughter, which I hapily feel up for, but it turns out by "daughter" he meant his prized sheep and then I try to run but he's got a 12-gauge in my face and then the ruffies, and the aching/burning sensation, the suppressed memories....

You can hear my the pump on my car. It's sounded the same for about 4 years. Loud. The main pump usually gives plenty of notice before death so I personally would not worry a whole lot about it. Change the filter and drive.

Re: Fuel pump hissing (BillLeBob)

How much should I pay for a used filter, or do they make them new anymore?
And, just for clarification, you mean the external filter not the one in the tank right???

Re: (Ragnarok)

Cool, thanks a lot.
Is there a way to tell that the filter I'm removing from a junkyard is in good shape. Or, again, is this a part that can be bought new? (from somewhere other then Brazil)

Re: Fuel pump hissing (BillLeBob)

Yep, upon closer inspection it is definately the fuel pump. Just gonna let that one go til it dies. Changed the fuel filter though ($25 Purolator). It had never been changed.
Note to others: remember to take the washers off of the bolt and clean thoroughly before re-installing.
