I had my car parked on the street this morning, and I got into it on the driver's side, which was against the curb. I started her up, turned on the V1, got out my cell phone to check for messages briefly, hooked up my iPod, turned the stereo on, and backed up a bit.
I pulled forward a little bit, and felt a tiny bit of resistance against the back tires, but I had parked on a bit of mud and dirt, and figured that's what it was. I backed up again, then pulled out of the spot. When I fully pulled out, I felt myself drive over something in the back. I figured it was a bottle or something, and then I looked in my sideview mirror, and saw the head of a cat!

My heart SANK, I stopped the car immediately and ran over to it, but it was too late, the cat was long gone. It's eye had burst out of it's skull, and there was blood everywhere. There was also blood and fur on my right rear tire.
I feel AWFUL. The thing I don't understand is that I have 2 cats, and they do NOT like loud noises. In fact, I've lived with several cats over the years, and not one of them liked loud noises, they would run instantly away when they heard them.
So, if this cat was still alive when I started the car, wouldn't it have run away?? I even took a minute or two to get everything ready in the car, and backed up first...I wouldn't have hit the cat in reverse, only when I pulled forward. So if it was still alive, why didn't it run?! Is it possible that a stray died under my car last night, and I just ran over it's dead body this morning?
I feel SO SO SO TERRIBLE, I might have killed an innocent cat, and I can't stand the guilt.

That's awful!
Not to make you feel worse, but some cats aren't afraid of anything. There's a huge fat cat in my neighborhood that will curl up in the middle of the road and take a nap. When I drive by, he will not move. I have to drive around him. So maybe this cat was like that. In either case, don't feel so bad, it was an accident.
Oh yeah... the eyeball thing was nice and gross for first thing in the morning

Sorry to hear it, I hit a dog a couple of months ago, or actually I should say the dog hit me. It had just turned completely dark outside and I was cruising down my parents street. Out of no where this mutt comes flying out of the woods. I hit the breaks hard and swerved as far right as I could w/o crashing into several mail boxes and bam! The stupid dog slammed right into my front quarter panel/bumper. I just saw it roll off in my sideview mirror.
The owners had apparantly just let it out to run (smart, I know), because they got to the dog before me. Their daughter, maybe 14, was also there balling her eyes out in disbelief. The dog was just laying there, completely conscious but not making a noise (it looked like it had broken something in the back half of its body). The father picked the dog up and walked away all pissed off (he hates any car thats not american muscle). His wife was all concerned about damage to my car, luckily there was none. The dog turned out to be fine and the father later apologized. He said by looking at my car he had assumed I must have been "haulin' ass"

Good thing I was only going about 30 mph (limit = 25 mph)before I hit the brakes.
Sorry for the ramble, I guess my point was that I feel your pain. My heart sank when I saw that poor girl crying...

It had to be already dead.... my cats will run like hell at even the slightest unfamiliar noise.
Either way it sucks.. but try not to think about it much.

Mike--
They often jump on top of tires because they're warm and it's a secluded area. The noise might--or might not--scare a cat away. A cat may stay there because it feels like it's out of sight.
I've hit a couple of animals in my years of driving and I really felt terrible afterwards. Bottom line, though, is that it was not your fault. Unfortunately, it's just one of those things that happens. Sorry.

Did you notice a ransom note? Any rope? A group of giggling mice or dogs nearby? Maybe he (or she) was depressed?

Seriously, I think you're right. If that cat was alive, I'm sure it would have bolted when you fired up your R. I'm thinking maybe some kids killed it the night before and placed it under your tire to make you think you killed it.

Or if not when you started the car, definitely when you started to roll. I would say it either cozied up to your car and died, or you put a very sick cat out of its misery.
I do feel for you though

You should visit your local humane society and adopt a kitten. Then you'll feel better. And raise it NOT to sleep under cars!

I've already rescued 2 cats and a dog! If I had more room, I'd get more, believe me!
Here's a picture of the cats, by the way: (Mimi is the black one, Bo is the mocha one)

I'd be distraught if something happened to either of these two.

Thanks for cheering me up, guys!

Any pics?

Sometimes cats like cars for heat and shelter when it is cold/windy. When a was growing up I had a friend who had a cat, his mom went to crank up her Jeep one day and felt some resistance at first when she went to turn the motor over and then got an alternator light, when she popped the hood what was left of the cat was wrapped around the belts that had come off the AC, alternator, and various pumps......cat was trying to stay warm so it had climbed in next to the motor.
Don't feel bad, it was probably already dead.......and if not, you can only control so much in this life, it's not worth stressing about the things you can't.
