what's the deal with the hatch? i can't quite see it... is it a US plate size?

yes it is. i had to cut up another hatch so i would have my "patch piece". the patch is the darker colored metal on the inside and the very center is a patch i had to hand make so everything would be flush. there will be no plastic/lock on the back of this as you can see from the pictures. and the liscense plate will be lit up by hollow liscense plate bolts that have hidden LED's in them. ( i believe these are used in custom hot rod applications mostly.)

remember you have to have lights for your license plate to be legal

i am using something from the hot rod era for liscense plate lighting to make it look clean...where the bolts/screws would normally go to hold your plate on will be a set of hollow chrome bolts that have tiny slits on the bottom of them that have a tiny piece of plastic flushed in them with LED's that will disperse the lighting in a broad downward pattern across the plate. --o-------o----
