Gearbox Oil Leak

Is there a favourite place for oil to leak from?
It was making some interesting noises so I drained the oil - took 1.5L out and put 3L of new stuff in. The noises went away so I hammered it for a 100 mile or so. THe noises are now back and I have oil up the back of the car. I am suspecting that it is leaking out and falling into the air under the car and the turbulence is spreading it up the back of the car.
Golf G60 btw.

You put in 3 liters? The gear box only is supposed to hold 2 liters. What kind of noises are you hearing?

THe Haynes manual said 3L and thats what went in before it started over flowing.
It is a whirring in 1st and 2nd and some times third. It has no effect on power delivery.

The bently says 2L to the fill line. IIRC
