Re: Gauge lights (MDVDuber)

Hi, you can still get those from the dealer, about a buck or two each.
Be careful when replacing them, you can brake the wires in the process...
I think the ones with the black built-in socket are no longer available, so you need to use caution changing the bulb.

Re: Gauge lights (Cab42)

Yep, but then I'd be cross posting.....Bad boy!
Thanks. I found similar looking bulbs at pepboys, but without the black plastic. I looks to me like the originals are soldered to the metal connections, am I wrong about that?

since the bulbs don't really come out of the sockets

, you can also get both bulbs and sockets from http://www.egauges.com

Uhhh...the VDO gauge bulbs do come out of the sockets...at least on the older cars. The sockets are NLA at the dealer. The bulbs are common and easy to find.
The sockets in the cluster are bonded and the bulbs aren't very easy to remove.

Re: Gauge lights (Thomas_covenant)

I've not yet seen anything '81 or newer that did not have the bonded bulbs. Those sockets w/ the bonded bulbs do not have the spring-loaded contacts to accept replacement bulbs... the leads are soldered/brazed/welded.
The replacement sockets I got from egages.com had proper contacts to allow future bulb-only replacement. Just wiggle and pull on your bulbs. If they come out of the socket, then, GREAT, you only need bulbs. If they won't budge, then you'll likely have to get replacement sockets, too.

Both my '81 and my '84 and about 10 different Rabbits and Rabbit converts that I looked at in the 'yard all have bonded bulbs in the clusters, but spring loaded sockets in the VDO gauges. The spring loaded sockets are quite a bit longer, too. I haven't looked at any Cabriolets that I recall, just the Rabbits.

I just fixed mine and yes all the parts are available from the dealership for a low cost...
The bulbs are $1 or so each, and in the original setup, they should be one black plastic holder with the small glass bulb with the wires off it and 2 larger brass holders with larger pop-in bulbs.
Mine however was modified to the 3 black holders for some reason, and as noted above, the bulbs for them aren't exactly the same as the originals. Not to worry though, if they break - the ones you get from the dealer will still fit but you have to bend the wire connectors off the sides of the bulb for good contact, and you should be all lit up...! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
