i know insurance companies dont care about that...but im just proving to the people in this thread who automatically assume the worst when they hear im 18
i'm doing the same thing as you ginster...getting rid of the old car for the new one...im just trying to find the best possible price

Think about it, an 18 year old with a v6 hatchback. How many kids do you see street racing, driving like they own the road and so on... I see this all the time and so do most people on this forum that is why we automatically assume that an 18 year old with a vr6 is just asking for trouble. I always have some one trying to race me and rev their engine at me and all the nerdy tactics to get me to race. When I first got my VR i was fell for these pathetic races but quickly realized that i was being an idiot. Now I don't let anyone bother me. I just drive and mind my own business and let these kids tail gate me and try to cut me off to get my attention but i just don't pay any more attention. Now imagine an 18 year old getting provoked to reace, most likely he would right. I'm not saying that you will race or drive carelessly but that is just the general Categorization that 18 uears old are put in.
You can't get away from high insurance rates right now. You can either suck it up or park the car.

You will not find a good price with that car, or any other you'd probably want to drive. When I was 20, considering a mk3 jetta 2.slow. I was looking at around $4000 for insurance. That was with a G2, but you get the idea.

As it stands now, although my insurance is cheap as insurance goes....
It'd be cheaper if I drove a car that wouldnt be considered by the average under 25 male. That means no civics, no cavaliers, most vw's. You need something absurdly lame ass, and then you'll get somewhat of a break.

Re: (zachary1)

Unfortunately, you are going to have to do a lot of leg-work (or in this case phone work) to call around and find yourself a better rate. All insurance companies have different way of rating drivers and cars. If I get a cheap rate somewhere, it doesn't mean that you will. The only way to get better insurance rates is to call around.
When I had my first car a few years ago, I called around. Highest quote was $3600, lowest was $1400. Big difference, huh? Rates were still low back then. I don't pay a lot for insurance compared to others, but I also drive an 8 year old diesel. Not exactly in the 'sports car' bracket.
BTW, I know cars are fun, but they are a money pit which never gets recovered. Better to stick with slightly less, and put more money away for a house/condo/the future. Meh...I am not going to go into a parental lecture.
Bottom line is there are no easy answers when it comes to insurance. You are going to have to sit down, pull out the yellow pages, and call every single place in the phonebook. THEN you'll know what the going rate is. Call up brokers, they may be able to get you a better deal. Brokers can be hit and miss. Some may get you good rates all the time, while others will get you good rates for a year or two, then bad, then good. (brokers shop around to different insurance companies each year to find you the best rate)

Re: (Toronto Vento)

OK I'll give you some advice even though i am a teensy weensy bit older than you. I turn 25 next month and fortunatley my insurance was calculated as a 25 year old. I actually waited for them to calculate me as a 25 year old and chose to by my car then.
My family does not live here, so i cannot go under their insurance plan unfortunatley. So i have to pay my own way. If you have that parent option, take it, it seems to me that 90%of folks here do it that way unless they have no parental drivers which is rare.
When i was in the infancy stages of choosing which car to get, i had to work backwards. I chose the car according to the insurance rate. I wanted a toyota and i had to flip that idea out of the window becuase of the insurance. When i first looked up some quotes it was ridiculous, i was being quoted an average of 3500-5000 dollars, at which point i thought the TTC was indeed the better way. Until i checked out group insurance plans becuase i'm a university alumni.
The 2001 jetta gave me a relatively decent insurance rate, it's $2447 per year, so i went under the Meloche Monex group insurance plan (Under Yorku U. Alumni) at least my degree got me cheaper insurance, didn't get me much else like a great job

...... So take my advice and stay in school... it'll get you better insurance rates if anything....

Dude you are not going to be able to find insurance lower than a certain amount becuase of your age bracket. I can understand how frustrating it must be for you becuase you've worked hard to save up for your dream car, and you know you're a mature driver. But in reality things get a little tough, i can tell you that the lowest insurance you will probably find will be about $5000 - $6000, and even then you gotta make sure that it isn't some shifty company that won't deliver on it's policy if someone decides to nick your car (i hope not).
Sorry if you're not hearing what you wanted to hear, i wish you the best of luck....either you get any old car that gets you from point A to point B with affordable insurance, and wait it out till you reach 'that age' or go under a parents or relatives policy....all the best

Re: Another Insurance Thread (ric302)

I think the next step it to change the address on my license eh... that is supposed to reduce my insurance by how much?? 30% insane man!!! But i guess it would be better to give some relative's address... at least they can forward their mail to you....
So wait... doesn't richmond hill have lower insurance rates? My aunt lives there... should i change my address???

thumbs up to what sexy sabbath said... that's basically where i started in 2002... was thinking about getting a honda civic since those are everywhere and must be cheap... turned out the resale value for those guys are high and so is the insurance for some odd reason.
i was a vw fan from day one but I wrote it off at first thinking german = $$$. in the end it turned out a 2.0 was cheaper in insurance than a civic or a corolla. in my case it kind of worked cuz I never had my heart set on a GTI (although deep down i wanted one).
in fact until one month before i got the 1.8T were i still under the impression that it'll be a long time before i can afford the insurance on a new GTI. good thing things have changed a little since i was 22.

I use monex.ca
I'm 21, one speeding ticket, and use a Professional Engineers of Ontario discount.
94 Jetta, no collision/deductible = $1,400 a year
01 wolf 1.8T with colision/deductible = $2,300 a year
Its alot, but pretty good if anyone else has a professional designation. This time school pays off <:

Re: Another Insurance Thread (WannabeVWguy)

I am just finishing up a four year degree at Ryerson. The last four years I regret in only one respect.. No car..
I had the chance to pick up a nice '98 VR6 myself a couple weeks back, but I recognized the cost of insurance, parking, maintainence, gas and everything added in to driving a vehicle and realized for myelf, without much deliberation, that the VR6 is out of the question until I am at least 25. Mostly for insurance reasons.
So, now I am the proud owner of a Mk2 8v that cost me $800, I pay $1400 for insurance, save big bucks on gas (compared to VR). Plus, with money saved, I can say hello to more mods

I would NEVER in my right mind pay gobs of money for insurance like that. Think of what insurance means.. and you'll realize you don't want to spend more than you need.

I have my auto insurance with Meloche Monnex as well. However, when I was getting my quotes, I discovered that the University of Toronto alumni discount was much better than the Professional Engineers of Ontario discount. Perhaps the alumni is a much larger group than PEO, therefore Meloche can offer a more competitive rate. Anyway, shopping around even within the same company may yield surprising results.

Re: Another Insurance Thread (WannabeVWguy)

The statistics are against you at your age and choice of vehicle. You'll have to convince everyone in your age group to be a careful driver and never speed or crash into things. Insurance companies love stats.
I had to pay a couple of arms and legs to insure my first new car out of school and it was a low H.P. 4 door sedan. My parents didn't drive so most insurance companies didn't even want to insure me.

Ok, this is wierd. Just out of curiosity, since my auto insurance renewal is coming up, I went back to Meloche Monnex to review my quote. I'm told my insurance rates will be increasing 7% from last year. Last year, it increased 13% from the year before that.
So I went onto RBC online. I've always considered RBC Insurance to be quite expensive, but since their website was pretty user-friendly, I went ahead with a quote. Turns out RBC is offering me a rate that's 16% lower than my current rate!
Considering I have a group discount rate with Meloche, I find it baffling that RBC can offer me such a competitive rate right off the bat. I called them direct to confirm the rate and they said http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif.
Good bye, Meloche.

Sucks to have no collision, i know you don't plan on having an accident but that's why it's called an accident. Atleast you got cheaper insurance though. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
