i just recently bought my car...i've noticed that the first half of the tank, i.e. from 1/1 to 1/2 goes pretty quickly, i only get like 50-100 miles. the 1/2 to 0 mark lasts for much longer. is there any truth to this..or am i just paranoid.

I do about 150-180 from 1/1-1/2 and 150-180 from 1/2-E. 1.8T Jetta, and I drive pretty hard... 93 Octane.. nothing less.
Tank is 14.5 gallons... 12.5 before the light goes on.. and a 2 gallon reserve.

hmm that's weird
maybe i'm driving too hard on the first half..
but i don't deliberately change my driving from 1/2 to 0.
no hard driving..i have only have 100 miles for 1/1 to 1/2
My fuel light comes on at about 10.5 gallons down, and when I fill up and it "stops" when I look at the gas gauge inside it reads about an 1/8th less than full. I am afraid to pump more in. I should probably see the dealer about this.
I have pretty much the same situation. I go 125 miles before it moves off of full. Then it is about 50-25 miles per 1/8 slash on the gauge depending on how late I am

. Our gas gauges are anything but linear

If this is happening, then you have a bad fuel sender. Get it replaced at the dealer. I'm on #3.
Normally, I go about 50-70 miles before the gauge moves, but if you're going 100+ miles before it registers anything, then the fuel sender is definitely the culprit. They're crappy, just like the MAF's and window regulators. Not really VW's fault (directly) b/c they don't make the part, but they could get a new supplier. Someone told me that many brands of cars have the same problem, so there's probably not much one can to to eliminate 100% of the problem.
I had my fuel light come up yesterday, and I filled up the tank -- took 12.4 gallons. I guess I had (14.5 - 12.4 = ... ) 2.1 gal left in the tank, which means something like another 40 to 50 miles before I had to push more than the gas pedal to get it going. But also, there's some residual in the tank that you can't really use, so I suppose that means closer to 40 miles left. That's more than enough to find a gas station that I like.
