theres a thread on here(http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1944345) talking about the cupholders and the armrest in the mk4s. someone said that the console with the change pocket and no cupholders or armrest is what came on the GL models. I have a GLS VR6 and mine came with the change pocket console and no armrests or any of the gls things. im 100% sure it was never swithced and also i know its a GLS cause the GL models never came with a VR6 motor.

hahaha sorry okay i own a 2000 vr6 gls jetta. someone stated in the aforementioned thread that the GL model of jettas came with the change pocket instead of the armrest that comes in the GLS models. i was just wondering why if I have a GLS why my car came with the GL change pocket and not the GLS armrest? Is it because my car is a 2000 and the armrest came in the GLS models made after the year 2000? i hope this is a little clearer

i do not believe that the variations are by trim level but by year. i do not have center cupholders on my 2000 vr6 either. IIRC the change took place after 2002 and the ebrake location is closer to the driver's side as well.

It didn't come from VW like that, the cupholder was bought from VW as an accessory. It looked like this when I got it:

That's a 2001 GLX VR6 though.. but I don't think the trim level made any difference there.

His answer is correct. You car is a gls. No GL's ever came with a VR. THere are all kinds of weird combinations out there, whether it was a factory screw up or the dealer needed to borrow the armrest (and that is assuming you bought the car new, many owners remove them), there is no need to get all worked up about it.
