At first I thought it was all the pictures I was seeing...thinking they were taken on uneven ground with an empty gas tank. But after seeing more and more new Passat photos and then seeing the new Jetta in person, I came to realize my first impression was correct. The back end of these cars seems to be abnormally high. The side view also shows an abnormal rake. Even when standing in back of a new Jetta, I was thinking how high the lift-over point was for putting groceries in the trunk--all because of that abnormally high back end. Look at the rear wheel area and it seems like you see way too much of the inner wheel well.

I think it is to meet more SUV bumper heights from the rear, instead of the middle of the trunk lid.
[EDIT] BTW, the new A6 has the same design element and it looks good.

I think they should lower the SUVs instead.

Or just quit building the freakin' behemoths althogether. When will the lemmings grow tired of Suddenly Upside-down Vehicles?
Back to the topic, I'm guessing the elevated rear deck designs help with aerodynamics to some degree...plus it makes for a larger trunk volume (good if you're one who likes a lot of junk in the trunk, like I do). But your point about the high trunk lift-over is well taken. Maybe it won't be so bad with the wagon version. I'm a wagon guy, after all...

Take a look at the Euro Jetta photos here. They certainly look like they have lower tails than the US models.

As I posted several days ago, the side view reminds me of the mid 70's Triumph TR 7 whose claim to fame was the wedge look. The front has that Chrysler Stratus / Sebring look. Both these styling ideas are as stale as a day old bread!

your bread goes stale after one day? Maybe you should consider a bread box...

The wedged angle is valid, but I can't seem to visualize any remote resemblance to the Cryslers. BTW, the overhangs are abit 70's too, but I still love the overall look of this car. Then again, most of my favorite cars are from the 70's.
