from the upgrade and tuning standpoint, which is better the 1.8t or v6, i know that the 1.8t has a lot of options and all but its a lot less to work with from the beginning, help me out guys

Re: got into passats today and NEED one........ (brokedownjetta)

You probably wanna check out the posts on passworld.com. But most will tell you that the 1.8T is better for ECU modding. With an ECU upgrade you get boosted from 170 to 207 HP using 91 octane gas. I think for the V6, you only get around an 8 HP increase on top of stock 190.

if you don't do any tuning, get the v6. if you plan to tune, get the 1.8t. plenty of options out there from chip to intake to turbo upgrades. and any upgrade on a FI engine has a lot more power than it would on a v6.
the only major upgrade for the v6 is a supercharger.

I agree with everything said. The best chips for the V6 are either the Wett chip or the GIAC chip. I'm looking into the Wett chip myself and supposedly it will increase my 193hp to 205hp and my 206 lbs-ft of torque to 224 lbs-ft of torque. Though the additional torque will be nice the overall gains just don't compare to the gains from a chipped 1.8T.

Go with the 1.8T, unless you especially want all of the bells and whistles on the GLX. The V6 has marginally more power, feels like it has less, and gets about 20% worse fuel mileage. When putting in premium fuel, that can add up. I have a V6, my wife has the 1.8T, and I would trade with her in a minute if I could get away with it.

I will reitierate what others have siad if you really want to mod your engine the 1.8t offers up more options. The v6 is out of the box smooth and has what appears to be solid reliability my stepfather has one and he really likes his v6.
When test driving passats I drove all three engine types and I felt that with 4 motion the 1.8t was too under powered largely becasue of the how long it took the turbo to wind up. I don't like to mod(time and $$$) my cars so I went for what I could get the most HP/torque without modding the car. I have had too many friends who mod there cars and then have nothing but trouble with them. That said there are a lot of VWer's out there who mod and enjoy the quality ride they pay up for.
However, if you want power there is an 8 cylinder option out there with 270 + HP some of them even have six gears.
Cheers!
