Hey, first off...we both have 2001 jetta's. He bought his new, and ive had mine for over a year, and we've never had a problem. Then last night, out of nowhere, his keyless entry started working on my car! his actual key doesnt work of course, but he can unlock/lock/and open my trunk anytime now. is there anything i could do, or has anybody else had this happen? thanks a lot!

I had a couple of buddies back in college that had Saturn's that keys did the same thing. Only their's also worked in the ignition. The cars were different models and 2 years a part.
Weird stuff
Good luck with that one...

Re: My friend's key works on my car!!! (nothingspecial)

lol, the same thing happened to me a while back when i still had my passat. i went to a shopping center got out of my car and locked it... i heard 2 beeps, one of which wasnt coming from my car. i pushed the lock button again, and noticed that the beep was coming from a passat parked a row behind my car

i guess vw ran out of codes...

Re: My friend's key works on my car!!! (VDUBRACER187)

yeah...i dont know what im going to do. i called the dealer today, and he said it wasnt impossible, but it was really weird that we both happened to live in the same area with the same frequency. i understand it could happen, but my question is why it hasnt done it for the past year that we've both had out cars? it just started last night. the service tech. also said he couldnt do anything about it. thanks

My key actually works on my friends car (same as your situation where it unlocks/locks/etc but not to actually start it). Both our cars are 01's. I was told these codes cycle, and there have been times where my key doesnt work on his anymore. But a few weeks later it works again! This has been going on for over a year now and I'm STILL amused by it. Its especially fun at GTG's when we are rolling out, I get to my car first and as he's opening his door I'll lock his doors

get your car recoded by the dealer. they shouldn't charge you if you have good proof that another key works.

Correct, but many dealers do not belive it is feasible! My girlfriends beetle key did the same thing to my golf! She got rid of the beetle, so I am not all that worried now! VWOA must have both cars and all keys to see that it is true! Your buddy has to drive his car, and you drive yours. To prove that they are to 2 different cars! Have fun with the dealership tho, they will claim its a 1 and a million case (which it is, but it happens all too often)
