I went to go change my oil filter and oil today and im pretty sure i know where the filter is, its right in front of the oil pan and has a silver alen wrench thingy on it right? so i un did the allen wrech thinghy and oil came out but i couldnt figure out how to get the filter casing off. It was too cold out side to screw around so i just threw some oil in and left the filter in(only has 1000 miles on it) , but for next time how do i change it?>

Re: How do i change my oil filter?????? (NVmyVW)

its a pain in the arse. it took me about 1 hr to get mine off first time. either u can get the circular wrench, or imho i would get the slip joint oil filter pliers bc it is really stuck up there. if u get the circular wrench, it will take u about 40-50 turns just to get it lose bc u have no room to work with. hope this helps

run your car up on some ramps or jack it up on and put it on some stands.. gives you plenty of room to work... then you can either use oil filter wrench (kind of a big one) or use a socket (off the top of my head I can't remember what size). there is a rubber gasket in there that you might want to replace also.. (if you buy a filter from potterman's they toss in the gasket along with a new copper washer for the oil pan bolt http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif if you have good luck and the threads in the filter housing are too gunked up it shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes or so to get everything done

yeah i had my car up on ramps, got the metal peice off, but for some reason jsut had a hell of a time getting the black peice off, i didint have anything big enough to grip it. I hope im looking at the right thing

it is directly in front of the oil pan and is black with silver allen screw on the bottom right?

Re: How do i change my oil filter?????? (NVmyVW)

be carefull using a wrench. if the oil filter is old, like most, it may crumple with a wrench. mine broke in pieces so i had to buy a new one and I found that big metal strip that clamps around the outside of the filter housing is the best.

I would recommend a 36mm socket... I broke my filter housing the first time I was taking it off... tried vise grips... didn't work out. About a $30 part. If I were you, I'd get the socket(about $5) and just not worry about it any more... You may want to replace the filter cover as well. BTW, you're looking at the right thing.. you just need something real big to take it off

P.S.
Btw, ignore what the two people that have G60s said.. they're apparently ignoring your signature. They're giving you advise for the G60 filters.

Sweet thnaks guys, yeah i kinda freaked out about that whole G60 thing i though i was tkaing oil out of he worng thing

So if i need to use a 36 mm socket why is there an allen wrench thingy? do i need to uno that first. You would think that something like an oil filter would be so easy, it probably is and im jsut thinking way to much about it

Re: How do i change my oil filter?????? (fstedie)

Funny, I just ran into the same problem last night. I bought the 36mm socket to get that cap off but the previous owner must have done it the ghetto way with a pair of channel locks. So, when I go to get it off the end has already been rounded off.

I tried using channel locks but it is just not breaking that thing loose. I don't know how I'm going to get that thing off.
Oh, and I went to the dealer thinking it would be a few bucks to get a new one and it is $31, plus it isn't in stock.

Re: How do i change my oil filter?????? (VW KEVIN G)

i am a dealer vw tech. i use the allen socket to undo the metal part to drain oil and i use the 36 mm( i think that that is the size) to take out the oil filter. and yes replace the gasket. you dont have to but i would.
DONT USE ANYTHING ELSE TO DO IT!
