AEM was a good start. Next should be suspension or exhaust. You can get a good exhaust for that much (there's a GB for the Magnaflow for $350. and you can get the TT exhaust here http://www.thescirocco.com for $460. delivered). You can also get a decent susp. kit for your budget, but if I had the money (like I did) I would hold out for coilovers.Good luck!

I have done the ghetto mod myself. Not hard at all and really makes an impressive difference (especially on silver cars). My advise would be take your time and be patient. I got anxious and ended up having to re-sand and repaint because of drips.
