Ok folks, lately my car has been having a cooling issue. This all started after I had my alternator replaced, but I am thinking it may just be a coincidence as far as timing is concerned.
What will happen, is sometimes, my car will begin to run well past the 190 degree mark on the temp gauge. In fact, the fans wont kick on until the gauge hits about half way between 190 and 260.
Now, the fans work fine, and I replaced the Coolant Temp Sensor, thinking that might be part of the problem.
Here is another interesting thing. When this is happening, if I turn on the AC to get the fans turning, it doesn't blow cold air.
Then I will here a click like sound coming from under the hood, and suddenly it starts blowing ice cold air, and the car temp is back where it should be.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Did you check the AC cut-out thermal switch?
It's located on the coolant pipe connector suspended off the upper radiator hose.
Or the thermal fan switch in the driver side of the radiator for correct resistance?

Any advice on how to check them, or what they should read resistance wise?

No values I can spot quickly... however...
There's several pages in the Bentley service manual on how to trouble shoot fans / sensors (pages 19-5 through 19-11).
Grab hold of one for your MK4 and read up; since you're there on the car, it's easier to complete diagnostic work.
Best of luck!

I suspect the fan control relay over the coolant temp switch for the fans.....due to your statement that neither the temp, nor the a/c can regularly switch the fans on...this realy is common to BOTH circuits.
again, you'll need shcmatics, and the Bentley to help out,b ut I would start there...
