Well ive been going threw all kinds of websites, looking at the specs of all diffrent kinds of cars. I started out wanting a Volkswagen, first car I ever took interest in was a gti.
Now im 16 and its almost time to buy one of my own (yes me buy it, i worked my ass off for 3 years and have about 17 grand saved up) Do you guys think it would be a good first car? Above all comes saftey, itss most important to me. Also I want to drive a stick

I learned on a ford explorer, and an escalade (christ the cadalic escalade is a freakin tank, one giant blind spot.) I learned to drive a stick on a eclipse. The thing that draws me to the jetta is the size, i want something small.
I was thinking maby a 1.8t? Not too much, i dont want to jump right in and buy an r32 and crash into a wall, like the wet dreams of most of my peers. Ive had a crappy year, both parrents passed, and i just want to cut myself a break and buy something i can enjoy driving.
So what do you think abuot a jetta as my first car?
Thanks,
C. L.

Re: Is the Jetta a good first car? (Cops_Lie)

call your insurance company, it will help you decide mk3 or mk4
also, i was 16 (2 weeks ago) and i know we beat on our first cars... i did, mine was a contour, now i got a golf... stay out of trouble, a mk3 insurance was almost 100 less a month for me, a mk2 would be less... with a turbo is gonna add more...!!!!
call your insurance co before you decide!!1 also parts for mk4s are more if you plan to mod
just dont do anythign stupid, i regret spending it all on my mk4 2.o, wish i got a mk3 vr6

Re: Is the Jetta a good first car? (Cops_Lie)

1.8t's are great especially if you want something to mod the crap out of (and don't want a Honda)
But take it from me and go easy on the throttle if you don't want two tickets in two consecutive weeks... or get a radar detector after the first one.

DUDE!!! HES 16!!! LETS LET HIM GET USED TO DRIVING WITHOUT MOM AND DAD BEFORE WE ENCOURAGE SPEEDING PLEASE!
ok, im not saying your a bad driver bro, but your not the best, im not the best (not the worst of my friends or even my mom...

take it easy tho, id hate to see a young kid privilaged enough to own a beatiful dub have to sell it because his expenses skyrocket after speeding tickets (thats why i got the 2.o in the first place, keep me outta trouble more)

Re: Is the Jetta a good first car? (matt@tc)

i started with a mk3 jetta and loved it then moved up to a mk4 jetta and miss my mk3
but at least i have a 24v

The Jetta or Golf is a great first car! It is tops in its class in safety (so mom and dad will go for it), it is exceptionally easy to drive - even in stick shift form, and it has great visibility and is fairly easy to work on. There are a lot of cars out there to choose from for someone like yourself, but the Jetta/Golf would definitely be my recommendation to you. Drive it, you'll see.

Re: (ChrisM011)

my jetta is my first car....i went with a VR6 for certain reasons...dont feel like sparking a debate right now. On another note, i like it in the sense that it handles well, isnt too heavy, pulls hard especially on the highway. Also, the rents' like it because of solid german engineering and safety. If I were in the position you were in, I'd go with either a jetta or a gti, whichever body style you prefer as they're both basically equal in performance and safety. Also, I would only try and spend about 13-14k on the car(which will get you a low mileage mk4) of what you have saved, and use the rest for mods. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (ChrisM011)

Jetta is a great first car! I also learned to drive on a huge SUV and the jetta with stick is so much nicer. Definitely go for it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
PS - sorry to hear about you parents, I know what that feels like.

Edit- go for a TDI, awesome mileage, easy to mod!

my suggestion and you prolly wont like it

buy a used car for like 1000 maybe no more than 2000, use that car to get used to being a new driver, once winter is over and summer comes if you feel you are ready trade it in and get the jetta or gti, your only 16, when i was 16 i had dreams of buying a 1999 eclipse gsx, but boy was i glad i didnt, when i totaled my 99 dodge neon that i bougt for 1200.....EVERYONE crashes thier first car....

exact same story here! 2.slow

Re: Is the Jetta a good first car? (2.0tuner)

with 17k I would buy a mk3 vr6 and build the motor and put a turbo in it and call it a day, and the good thing insurance wont be as high if you buy a mk4. Just putting my 2 cents in

Re: Is the Jetta a good first car? (Cops_Lie)

well i got a jetta 2.0 gls and i love it....its my first car, so i was in the same spot you were, i dindt want somethin with too much power cuz i knew i dindt have driving experience and woulda been wrapped around a tree in no time....the 2.0, in my opinion, is a great starter to learn stick on which i did, and i guess you can say it is sorta quick lol but it is nowhere near fast, but hey id rather have a slow car and get made fun of for it then be in an accident...good luck wiht the choice! keep us posted
