I just wanted to get some opinions on the new Acura RSX Type S and the RSX standard model in automatic. My girlfriend wrecked her 96 Cabrio over a month ago and is now in the market for something new. Opinions on how it compares to a GTI 1.8T would be great. Unfortunately she has decided to go with something other than VW. Thanks for your opinions.

UnBiased.

Glad your girlfriend is OK, the Acura is a fine automobile, we would be so fortunate to have such a great dealer network, but onto the vehicle:
Here is why I didn't trade in my GTI:
1.) No Traction Control-I crave it
2.) No Heated Seats-Love those bunwarmers
The Type-S leased out $50/month cheaper than my GLX. I do like the car, but I don't want to get a Type-S and then have a Type-R come out a year later. I hate when that happens-kinda like the 24V V6.

Re: Acura RSX (GregFSU)

Honda's getting better with the concept of low end torque, but it's nowhere near the 1.8T's capacity. If you like torque, you won't like very many Hondas. I know this from experience, I used to drive a Honda

Re: Acura RSX (FryingPan)

Actually, I had been cross-shopping the 2k2 GTI & the base RSX back in Nov, I ended up with a 2.0L Jetta for more practical reasons, namely for my business I must have clients with me at times, but back to the RSX & GTI, I found the RSX to be an exceptional value, It has an automatic HAVC standard, as is an in dash CD, the cabin is almost too dismal for anyone greater than 5'6''. The base engine is more than sufficient, I would not call it fast, yet it's not slow, the biggest concern was that merging onto the interstate was more challenging than expected from the base mill. Also the handling if not more precise than a GTI, it becomes a hand full executing the car at it’s limits, beware of a rear end that isn’t afraid to snap loose. Fit and finish are top notch in both cars, yet the GTI appears to have a more serious demeanor emphasized on the contours and shapes inside, the RSX’s radical tonnage and contours accentuate the RSX’s “boy racer” image but contrast the GTI’s very business like feel, do note the RSX seats are second to none in this segment, very supportive very comfortable, all of your friends will insist you swapped for Sparco® racing seats. I think you will be thoroughly pleased with either, clearly I found the most bang for the buck out of the GTI, but initially feared reliability and durability, since you are familiar with Volkswagens, this should not be of concern to you.

Re: Acura RSX (GregFSU)

RSX's i-VTEC engines already got much improved torque over Integra's VTEC, however, its still lack of torque.
RSX handles very well with better refinement than an Integra. The steering has tons of feedback, stiff platform and suspension designed to really work well in corners.

Re: Acura RSX (turbo_nine)

I didn't like the looks of them at first, but after seeing them out on the road, they've grown on me.

No, I agree with you. FUGLY!! And those smoked lights would look much better on a darker colored car.

Re: Acura RSX (ChrisMD)

My sister bought a desert silver RSX automatic yesterday afternoon--so far, she's very happy with it. She chose it over the Jetta GLS (her second choice) partially because she wanted a two-door, but partially because she liked the fact that the Acura's dealer network and repair history is so much better than the Jetta's. In terms of things like safety and resale value, though, the cars are fairly comparable.

Re: Acura RSX (bgluckman)

dude i hate the rsx...all the buzz about how cool and great they are made me sick. maybe it was becasue all my honduh friends sweat tha car because it has a 6 speed. whoop dee doo. i think it's ugly. and i think it's even uglier hooked up. sorry. maybe it's right for your girl but it's too gimicky for me.

Re: Acura RSX (ChrisMD)

Paint the rest of that car black to match the hood, lights, and wheels, and you would have a fine lookin machine. Photochop anyone??

In general, I don't like the look of carbon fiber hoods, but this one looks quite nice.
