Ok I just got my galactic blue jetta, and I'm hella happy with it, but of course the inevitable has happened. it rained and now there's water spots all over it. Can you guys tell us how you clean your dark cars. Does a carwash suffice? If by hand, what do you use to scrub and dry? Is waxing a no no?

Hand wash & yes a nice coat of wax. Wife has Dark Blue Jetta MKIV.
When you say car wash? You mean, the hand car wash right, right yeah I thought you were joking. "We are not liable for damage or scrathces to your car" ha ha ha

Re: Keeping a dark car clean??? (nw bora)

Is there anything specific I should use? The way I washed my other cars was soap and water in a bucket. Sponge in the bucket then soap the car up... turn the hose on the car to get all the soap off, then dry with a chamois. Is that ok? any suggestions?

Re: Keeping a dark car clean??? (skills)

Unless you are fortunate enough to find a brushless one... they do a good enough job for a quick clean, and nothing ever touches your car. But you're right, nothing beats washing by hand. It's the curse of a dark color car, nothing beats it when it's clean but they are HIGH maintenance (sounds like my ex-girlfriend

Another suggestion would be to buy one of those california car dusters. It's great for removing dust and other stuf not stuck onto your paint.

Re: Keeping a dark car clean??? (keoni004)

Cali Duster spreads the dust particles and creats fine scratches on dark paints. I had to toss mine when I purchased my indigo GTI. Just wash it all the time....never wipe down or dust off after getting dirty. Dark cars suck to clean, but look oh-so-good when they are.

Never, rub your paint with anything! If you wipe it with a wet/soapy cloth, you better rince that cloth with a SEPARATE bucket before you put it back on your car. Be extra anal. My cars looked amazing... both galactic blue and now black... I got black because I wanted to accept the challenge of owning a dark colored car.

take a look at that.. the best was ive ever used... the rain will slide right off your car.......

What's the opinion on power washing? Most of our wash places are the buck/2min water gun type.

I don't understand this sentence....so one bucket with soapy water and the other with only water?

Re: Keeping a dark car clean??? (Ignorance1`)

Ok, I'll be the first to admit it but I am thoroughly anal about my car's appearance, when I've got the time. And you think Gal. Blue is bad. Try black. Much worse. At least all the guys that drive the silver cars know that they don't show dirt as badly!
1. Nothing but Meguiars. I use their car wash solution, the three step, i even have meguiars car wash cloths.
2. Wash in the shade, dry immediately, including the wheels. The clearcoat on those pits just like the paint. I use terry cloth on the windows, synthetic chamois on the car, and a dry towel on the wheels and tires.
4. About every 3 mos. apply a good coat of wax by HAND!!! Orbitals and Semi-Orbitals in the wrong hands will swirl the paint worse than an automatic wash.
Thats all for now. Cant see straight. too much Irish today(not that I'm any less Irish tomorrow...

x-actly, well put. I even wash my girl's Beetle when I'm done with mine. Both my Jetta and her Beetle are black, man my arms are gonna get huge with all that polishing.

Re: Keeping a dark car clean??? (Ignorance1`)

First off, don't SCRUB anything other than your carpets. Use a clean wash mitt and apply AUTO soap gently removing any dirt. I use Zymol Carbon wax and HD Cleanse cleaner and i'm happy with it. Wax every 2 months, cleaner/polish every 6 months and you'll be alright.
See my pics in my sig for the Zymol shine on a black Golf.

I've got a black dub....it takes persistence...and lots of it at that. One thing I find to be a big help is using that Eagle One finishing spray stuff. It puts a just waxed shine on the car and keeps it cleaner...longer.. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
