It was awesome that GM developped a concept for it, but it will more than likely stay like that, just a concept.

More than likely not. Babysteps.....

Have patience. This won't happen overnight. But I think it will happen.

I could be wrong here but I don't think GM developped hydrogen technologies themslves.

Er, GM's hydrogen tech has been primarily done in-house. Your link even agrees with that.

Let's hope not, since GM is pretty much betting the farm on it:

I didn't say GM didn't develop their own systems, nor did I say GM ripped it off of anyone. But they also didn't come up with the whole idea of it either.

...okay? Then by the same token, I hope you're not giving Toyota any credit for any innovations they've made on hybrid cars.

Way to put words in my mouth.

I was demonstrating a point. There is such a thing as an innovative twist on an existing idea (particularly when the idea is perhaps not possible with current technology). Hence the Toyota comment.

Re: (xdre)

Uh huh. That or you saw that I (well, my parents) had several Toyotas and you automatically assumed that I'm a "Toyota can nevAr lose" type of guy. Wrong. I'm fully aware that Toyota had basically nothing to do with the whole concept of hybrid cars and I never, ever claimed they did.

Boy, we sure aren't left wondering where the "vicious" part of your nickname came from. Can you get any more mean-spirited?

he is right. I had 3 GM products and they all feel apart which was part of the problem. mostly the big issue is they can not service what they sell which makes things worse.
I had a lemonia z34, and a Crapilac Catera, actually the Oldsmobile was not that bad.

So you asked for a link and then say that the US government has been bought off by GM so it doesn't count?

Did you read who was testifying:
Statement of Mustafa Mohatarem, Ph.D., Chief Economist, General Motors, Detroit, MI
It's an Economist who works for GM, so it is not a statement from the government. He's providing a testimony on behalf of GM, so that is why I don't think it really should be accepted as being unbiased.

Good Lord, do we REALLY have to muck-around in that tired old "I owned a Blah-Blah-Blahmobile, and it fell apart, therefore they're all junk" moshpit? C'mon people, expand your horizons a little bit.

The trade restrictions weren't just on cars. The big issue in the 80's was the ridiculously large trade imbalance with Japan, the fact that most of Japan's markets were closed or protected from imports by tariffs, and that the Japanese government was artificially decreasing the value of the yen (Japan's markets are more open than they used to be, but the rest is still true today).

If there was proctectionism like you say, why have European car companies been able to break in to the Japanese market? Do they just target American cars? I think that would be highly unlikely.
I think the problem is that the US car companies do not pay attention to what consumers want. It wasnt until about 1995 that the US car companies even offered RIGHT HAND DRIVE cars in Japan, talk about being seperated from the consumer. The big three did not even pay attention to what was the norm in that market - how do you expect to sell anything if you do not do some research.

Sigh. Protectionism does not automatically mean the market is closed to all imports. It is very true that the domestics paid almost no attention to the Japanese market, and their failures to date stem from that, but it does not change the fact that there was protectionism in place. Is that any better? http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

you missed the point - 3 brands from GM and all of them fell apart... ( engines, tranys, airbags etc)
as for expand my horizons a little bit.... I DID - TURNED TO VW - AUDI and never looked back.

Good riddance to GM

I didn't miss anything. So you owned 3 instead of 1. That's three times the irrelevance. Big deal. Statistically insignificant. Point taken.
I've owned seven brand-new Volkswagen vehicles over the years, and about a dozen or so used ones. Aside from a few little niggles on a couple of them, I'm complaint-free. So, thusly, Volkswagens are perfect. Touche.
