they might break after 15 years..
I always thought they were better, the rubber wrapped in cloth.

I replaced a whole wack of hoses in my 99 VW this summer. And no, they did not last even close to 15 years. Most had cracked severely after that short time in my car. (Some had cracked open completely with nice ensuing air leaks.) My car ran a heck of a lot better after putting in silicon hoses that I do not have to worry about anymore. My coolant hoses were also pretty cracked up already as well - and two needed to be replaced. (But I replaced all to just be done with it.)
You can see the air hoses I replaced on the left hand side of the engine bay:

Those are Hosetechniques silicon air hoses, Samco silicon coolant hoses and Magnecor spark plug wires as well. I am replacing more air hoses as I go along and discover any with cracks. (Which seems to be pretty well everytime I crack open the hood.. sigh.) I figure all original air hoses will be gone by next summer.
I ended up getting my air hose from http://www.hosetechniques.com in the States.
