VR cam chips are a myth, all they do is raise the idle.

Yes, for GIAC's 256 chip that's all they do.
I have heard, however, that GIAC's 268 chip actually moderately alters the fueling up past 5000 RPMS.
Either way, depending on whose 263 cam you are using, a 256 chip may be better suited. I've always head that the 268 chip is designed more for really high-revving fuel-instensive cams like 268 or 272 cams.
That said, if you already have a GIAC chip (or other brand), it'll probably run just fine wiht 263 cams - the idle may be a little lumpy though (can be fixed with a Vag-Com).

I have the same setup (cat 263 w/ giac 268 chip).
Idled like poop w/ the old GIAC chip. new fuel map feeds the cam right nicely.
you could do it in vag-com, but you would have to do it every time you turned on the car ;-)

Actually, I think it will retain idle level changes until you unplug your battery...

Well the deal is you want to use the 268 chip. I have looked into this for a couple of weeks and the 263 is closer to the 268 than the 256. As a matter of fact the 263 actually put more horsepower to the wheels then did the 268 and that is why cat cams stopped producing them. Go with the 268 chip!

Re: (flygti14)

Sorry for bumping an older posting guys. But first of all, is this guy that posted before me saying that there is some dyno numbers of the CAT 263 cams. I could have sworn that was like the holy grail with cams on here. And if what he said is true and they put more down then the 268 then why in the hell would that be the reason they stop producing the cam. Did Schrick threaten to assassinate them for making a better cam???

it's called research and development. Diesel engines make more power than steam engines, you dont see many steam engines around do you? They revised the grind and got better results, simple. I actually have the 268's and they make a huge difference in my car, I'm curious to how much better the new grind would be.
