Maybe he likes sedans?
Regardless, in this case, I'd go with the Jetta.
Initial price is going to be roughly the same, but a Jetta that's that close to new will last a lot longer than a 7 or 8 year old A4. If you go with the Audi, you're looking at a car with, probably, 2 or 4 reasonably reliable years left in it. If you go with the VW, you're looking at more like 8 years, and if you DO get rid of it sooner, it'll have significantly more value.
A 10 year old A4 is functionally valueless, whereas a 5 year old Jetta's gonna be worth something.

Seriously, get somthing cheap, save your dough for sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Plus, you are 19. Odds are, what ever you get you will total it in 6 months anyways......To answer your question, me likey the A4

It is difficult to say what is a better car for you.
-obviously, the A4 was a better car from the factory (but if youre not going the Quattro route; the Jetta is a better performer)
They are both going to cost you in regular maitenence.. but after shelling out 2.5k on the clutch/t-belt/and new brakes; the car was just like new @ 70k miles.
-my point is that being german, they are both relitively expensive to maintain... but the Audi is probably more rewarding.

i am looking to get my first car soon. I want to either get a 2000-2004 vw jetta or a 96-99 audi a4. I have looked at both but i dont know which one to get. Which one is better?

try to pick up a late year a4 1.8tq... awesome car.

Re: jetta or a4 (Golgo-13)

Technically, the Jetta is an "A4"..OR 4TH gen/model/iteration.
a better way to word the question is:
is the 200X VW Jetta better than a 200X Audi A4??
something like that...then we have the specific info on providing an accurate opinion.... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Your point is immaterial, he said Audi A4. No one outside or vwvortex calls a Jetta an A4.

Re: jetta or a4 (LSinLV)

Coming from someone who works on these cars all day....
The Jetta is going to be cheaper to maintain in the long run, and yes, will have less finicky problems (power accy. stuff, little crap). This is due to the car having less of these items then an A4. (well, really depends on the level of Jetta you get)
Do you live in a snowy climate? and were you looking into an A4 Quattro as opposed to a front wheel drive A4?
Also BEWARE of any A4 with a 1.8t in it. These motors are the ones with all of the sludge problems. If you do look at one, ask to see every recipt of any oil changes done on the car, and have your mechanic look it over really well.
If I were you, I'd go with the Jetta. On top of being cheaper, there are a few more performance parts for the VW and most of them are cheaper as well.

Good luck! and be happy with whatever you decide on getting. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: jetta or a4 (carguy0213)

I persoanally hate VW products. I think they are garbage. I have a 1998 A4 2.8L Quattro. If you are reppin' the Dirty Jerz, you may want the Audi with its AWD for winter. It is def. worth it.
I love my old Audi but on a 7-9 year old Audi you could be playing with fire regarding repairs.
1. Stay away from the 1.8T. I don't care what anyone says. The turbos start to crap out with age / mileage.
2. Check all the maintenance records to see that it had oil changes, major services (50K, 90K, 120K, etc.), changed tranny fluid, and the 2 service recalls (LK and JH recalls, front control arm, vacuum hoses) done on it.

Thats when they are ready for the Stage3+
-or a FSI2.0T retrofit

Re: jetta or a4 (teutonicgoodness)

Neither will be affordable to maintain, unfortunately.
It depends on your priorities, but I might consider a '96-99 Mk3 Jetta or a Japanese car instead. Lower cost of ownership and potentially higher reliability.

Re: jetta or a4 (carguy0213)

You should go with the car that suits you better, whichever you like more is the car you should go with. Either car is not cheap on repairs, and the audi is older therefore will most likely have more miles on it so youll have more to fix, something to keep in mind. They are both nice cars but id personally go with the jetta.

not possible that I know of due to the integrated turbo/manifold....back to the 1.8T motor....

Possible according to an OEM distributer in the UK.
-claims you can retrofit the 1.8 with the FSI2.0 head, block & turbo (but I am no mechanic)
I should mention that this is me dreaming, and I should not believe everything I read... but a FSI2.0T B5Q would be Soooo Nice (only money and time will tell regarding this potentially ideal engine swap)
