I'm going to test drive a GLI in a few hours, already have the appointment set up. What should I look for, that will have me sold on this car? Any cool features? Anything fun to try with the DSG? I am actually more interested in the GTI, but I don't think my dealership has them in stock yet. :-/. Thanks in advance guys

Really the main thing is the DSG. Play with that in all it's modes, Drive, manual, and sport. Keep an eye on the lack of turbo lag and just remember the potential this engine has for modding.
FUZE drove one last night and i've offered to take him for a spin in my chipped GLI so he can get a feel for that.

Re: Going to Test Drive a GLI (thread)

Drive both the dsg and manual. I don't understand how to optimize use of the dsg - I think it needs some seat time that isn't available in a normal test drive. But, the manual is great - you can really focus on the features of the car w/out being distracted by the newness of dsg. I just drove a gli yeseterday, I noticed the abundance of power, the lack of turbo spool up (lag), and its awesome handling. Pay attention to the tires on the car. the one I tested had 17" all seasons, which are to whimpy for the power that the car puts down.

I definetly want to get a manual unless DSG convinces me otherwise. Just a few questions though.
-To drive DSG smoothly is it necessary to lift off the gas when shifting manually?
-What does Package 2 consist of?
-I have heard some crazy numbers coming out of the 2.0t fsi with just the chip what kind of numbers should expect? and could DSG handle those numbers?
thanks all I'm pretty excited

Re: (DjPtsatsot)

No, it is not necessary to let off of the accelerator.
Package two gets top leather sport seats, heated seats, and climatronic.

Re: (DjPtsatsot)

Everything that i have read says that DSG or Manual...the cars should be able to handle it.
I have the APR on a manual, and I am lovin it.
Like someone said...make sure you drive both. You may drive the manual and not be able to imagine not having it.

Re: (BRM10984)

Pkg 2 also includes Pkg 1 options, which are a sunroof and satellite radio.
I think Pkg 2 is the sweet spot, although apparently they have been slow sellers since seeing a $27.6k or $28.5k sticker has quite a shock on some people. As a result, they can be had for near invoice (or at most about $500-600 more than what Edmunds says is invoice and about $500-1000 better than their TMV) before incentives.
Check out the bolstered seats in the Pkg 2. I like them, but others think they are a bit tight. As usual, arrive at the dealer a little early and try to sit in one of the GLIs in their showroom to check out things like the seats, blind spots (they are a little big but manageable on the Jettas in general), and seat belt fitment.
Note that the GLIs all have bi-xenons with washers. Turn on the headlights and activate the windshield washers to check them out. The headlamp washers go the first time and every 5th time after that. Try the radio on a deep bass station to see if you have a rattle (some Jettas still have a speaker rattle issue). Take it on a cloverleaf to check out the handling and steering, and check out the brakes. They may sell you on the car.
Good luck and good dealing!

... when it comes time to move forward in the process I definetly will. I am sort of in love with the smoothness of the DSG, I was very impressed when shifting at around 5k and keeping my foot planted, how smooth it all was. I was also impressed with the cars very nice responsivness, and the package 2 seats. I coul car less for leather, but all in all this car was very nice. I am not impressed with the $29k price tag they put on the car w/o nav and the lack of the 18" wheels.
Like you said the brakes were great and the 60-0 stops were handled very well by the car. With that said I still must wait for the GTi which is right around the corner

Re: Going to Test Drive a GLI (DjPtsatsot)

Do yourself a favor and drive the Jetta 2.0T before you buy the GLI, just to make sure you like the ride difference.
Truth be told: I much prefer the look of the GLI to my Jetta, but the ride was a little too stiff for my preferences.
This is not a 2.0T vs. GLI battle, just a personal observation..... Both are marvelously engineered machines and look fantastic!!!!!

Good advice. The 2.0T is the Lexus ES450 of the bunch and the GLI is the SC400. Two amazing cars for different kinds of people.

Yes, the sticker shock and the initial release of the Pkg 2's as the sole GLIs in August probably did keep GLI sales down. Nevertheless, you can probably get the GLI Pkg 2 DSG for about $26.9 or less (pre-tax of course, but otherwise "out the door") before any VW loyalty discounts. Nav is another $1900. I think the 17" wheels are fine and don't miss the 18". I'm actually running 16" wheels with winter tires right now, and the handling is still excellent.
I couldn't care less about leather either (I had cloth in my B5), but since I wanted a 2.0T and the only ones available in August were the GLI Pkg 2s, that's what I have. Now that I have them, though, I find that they are nice and soft, although I definitely need to put the Lexol on them twice a year (at least on the driver's seat).

Re: Going to Test Drive a GLI (etcthorne)

This is very good advice. On my previous car ('03 Maxima), I purchased the luxury version (GLE) for the particular options it came standard with, and added a Tein S spring system and struts to get the lower/sporty ride I wanted. The GLI I just purchased to replace it is almost exactly how I wanted my Maxima to ride, but without the hassle of installing all the parts. VW knew what they were doing by seperating the 2.0T and the GLI like they have. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Going to Test Drive a GLI (thread)

Another difference between 2.0T and GLI: power seat with memory in 2.0T vs. manual in GLI.
My GF is much shorter than I am and likes to drive with the seat higher and with a slightly different pitch. To her, readjusting the seat manually is a pain; as opposed to having the memory set. Seems silly to me, but I just point it out.
(VW really should have had power adjustment available in GLI Package 2)
