I need a surrogate tranny so I can rebuild mine. There's a MkI Diesel at a U-pull-it close by that has a tranny that ought to work. Anyone have any info. From what i've read, it will fit (definitely will fit,) but what about linkages and input shaft and CV joint connectors (I forget the damn name.)
I searched and I got an answer of yes, but I just want to make a 100% sure.

Some MK1 trans won't fit into a MK2 or MK3 chassis, make sure the MK1 trans you are looking at has the 3 holes for the MK3 mounting bracket... http://www.thediygroup.com/020mount.htm
As mentioned above, the mainshaft diameter is 22mm, your clutch in the car is for the 24mm mainshaft trans that is on the MK3 so you'd need a MK2 8V clutch disk.
The flanges can be swapped, but some 90mm MK1 cases will need a bit of grinding on the case to let the 100mm flange clear. This page shows how to swap the flanges.... http://www.thediygroup.com/020flange.htm
If you find a trans with a multi-terminal reverse switch, this page shows how to wire it to work in the MK3.... http://www.thediygroup.com/reverse.htm
If the R&P of the new trans is lower than 3.67, like with a MK1 diesel trans, then the speedo will be a few mph off at freeway speeds. This page shows the speedo gear to use with the various R&P ratios, but because the MK3 uses an electronic sender, you can't easily change the gear anyway... http://www.thediygroup.com/020ratios.htm
More 020 stuff here... http://www.thediygroup.com/mk2.htm

why dont you just pull another 02O tranny from the junkyard... you'll pay next to nothing

Great Idea, ****o, If I could find one, I'd do it, and not ask stupid question about MkI trannies.

Re: A MkI diesel nonturbo tranny (Cabrio1.8T)

Flanges just swap over and as far as linkage, you'll need ALL the linkage from your current transmission.

I dont have a 1.8T, but I beat the snot out of my 2Y pretty often and it hasnt given me any trouble yet, on a 2.0 anyway. I think the tranny has near 100K miles on it now.

what's to say your transmission doesn't take a s**t tomorrow?

Re: A MkI diesel nonturbo tranny (reynolds9000)

you guys are getting me all wrong. i'm not bashing the 020 transmission, i'm only stating that it is not designed(in stock form) to withstand the power a 1.8t has and is capable of. It's also 15-20 years old and was designed for a motor making 90hp or something insignificant.
everyone knows i'm a 2.0 advocate and i too have a 2Y in my jetta. It's been rebuilt by Kraftswerk w/ a bolt kit and tall 5th gear. I have never had a problem with mine either. I'm only making 119whp though. From all the calculators i've used, 119 equates to about 150bhp.
i think it's a good decision to hold out for something a little stronger. why not a G60 O2A?
