i have a 1998 gti vr6 and I just ordered my chip. It is the chip that just plugs in and out... not soldered in. i went to http://www.iei.net/~chrphill/vw/vw.html for step by step instructions on how to install by chip. do you think i should install it myself or should i have a professional install it for 45 bucks? i am a little concerned cuz i have read that you have to be extremely careful when handling these chips and that you could fry your computer and kill your car. It seems easy and i understand everything. plus, my dad is a computer programmer and works with chips too and knows how to handle them and how to use them. ok and is there anything i need to do once the chip is installed? like let it idle or anything? thanks alot for the help!

i put my autothority chip in myself. didnt take long at all. if you understand it i say go for it but if you arent sure what you are doing i would go somewhere cause 45 is better than you would have to pay for messing something up.

Not a darn thing. My 89 GTI has a VR6 from a 97 DE GTI. I got the GIAC chip, and installed it myself in less than 15 minutes. First, disconnect your battery negative terminal. Then pull the slide on the plug to the computer, and the harness plug pops up and off. Remove the four torx screws on the top off the computer. Be very patient and use a thin pocket screwdriver to free the metal cap off the plastic case. When you get it loose just slide the whole computer board out of the case. Gently pry the chip from the socket with a small metal pick or screwdriver. (note the positon as one corner is notched) Install the new chip and re-assemble (SP?) in the reverse order. Connect your negative battery terminal and turn the ignition switch to the on/run position but do not start. Let it sit this way for five minutes. Then start the car and let it idle for 10 minutes. Thats it. no big deal.
After I put my GIAC chip in, I did about a 40 foot burnout. I Got 70 MPH outta second gear shifting right at the begining of redline, I haven't tried top speed but the car is much faster than stock.

You can buy wrist ground straps at Radio shack to prevent frying the computer or chip. Not a must but I bought 2 just to be safe http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
