Re: 1st Generation Olds Auroras future classic??? (Impeccable)

I always loved the way these two looked. I think the Aurora to be the more aggressive shape between them. Nearly 11 years from it's debut, and what, 13 or 14 since it was first seen the Aurora has stood up incredibly well. It's a very attractively designed sedan.
It's one of the few cars I WOULD tolerate owning in black and keep it clean just because the shape is so arresting without being coughbanglecough offensive.

I dig the door mounted air vents, frameless windows, mercedes style seat adjusters.

Behind the black panel at the top is a fairly comprehensive trip computer

Passenger side climate control WITH, bless St.Jrod, a passenger seat that offers a FULL complement of adjustments similar to the drivers seat. A small detail, but many manufactuers skimp there.

6200 RPM from a 4 Cam, 32 Valve V8? S'ok, sign me up. Oh, and the rockers you barely see on the wheel control the stereo and climate control

Hey, remember when BMW interiors used to angle towards the driver??? Now they look more like leather covered Cutlass Supreme interiors of the early 80's.

Shake, shake, shake senora, shake it all night long

Resale value is Yugolike. Could make the ultimate commuter car.

Sucks they were all autos that will surely decimate the resale value. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Yes, because there are tons of people shopping used Oldsmobiles that coulda, shoulda, woulda bought if it only they had a u-row it transmission. They'll beat that arthritis but good!!!!
It would be cool with a stick, but that's not doing anything to resale value. Oh, and for the major majority of cars, automatics have a higher resale value.

I just dont get why American car companies insist on making the majority of thier cars auto. Like the Impala SS or the MonteCarlo SS I know they never came 5-speed but... they should now.
I would love the new body Monte SS w/ 5-speed, RWD, and a SBC

Actually, the second-iteration Aurora did it for me more than the original. The first Aurora, with its strangely creepy-eyed, Panhard-esque headlamps always put me off from the frontal aspect, although the pretty roofline and voluptuous rear styling always is pleasing to see.
The second-iteration Aurora corrected several of the first Aurora's problems, and the design took a distinctly "crisped-up" look, that lent the car an almost Audi-esque look. And that's a compliment.
R.I.P. Oldsmobile. The carmaker that did NOT deserve to die.

Re: 1st Generation Olds Auroras future classic??? (vwlarry)

I really liked the Auroras, but only in black. Too bad olds decided to make family cars, without sport models they got chopped from GM. I think the mistake was deciding not to make both an aurora and a cutlass like mine:

Hey its my first car, and college aint cheap, if I had the money id make her perfect, but Id say Im doing a decent job keeping her in order untill then. She is 11 after all.

The only thing more stupid than executing Oldsmobile unjustly would be for GeeEmm to do the same thing to more of their automotive divisions. Just because many Car Lounge experts have no awareness whatsoever of the value of the Buick or Pontiac names in no way diminishes their importance to the automotive community, IMO.

HAHA you brought my thread back http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Supremes are nice but I hate the 3.1L, I liked the early ones with the digital dash

Re: 1st Generation Olds Auroras future classic??? (Impeccable)

The 90s Buick Riviera looks bloated in pics, but I remember seeing it on the highway in Oregon 3.5 years ago, to me it was like an eyeopener, it was to me, at the time, one of the most beautiful designs that ever came out of Detroit. It looked to me like it was the kind of car that really made a presence on the road. I've loved the design ever since.

I still laugh to this day about an ad for a performance chip/power booster in the back of C&D magazine about 10 years ago. Pictured was a 1st gen Aurora spinning its wheels with tons of smoke pouring out...
...only thing was the rear wheels were the ones spinning

My vote is for "yes". I looked at them when they were new. The interior was let down by some GM period plastics, but it was an outstandingly daring car, beautiful from all angles.
In my opinion, it is the beauty the Mercedes CLS could have been. Can anyone deny that the Aurora is simply much better-styled and proportioned than the CLS?
Dammit, now I want one. I'm gonna hit up autotrader.

I can, but it's because I like both, and hold both in similar regard. The Aurora suffers from an uninsipring interior, but it's bodylines are wonderful- I imagine setting it a better stance would make that more readily apparent to people.
