I followed up some leads from hidplanet forum a few weeks ago, and found some HID projectors and bi-xenon projectors that retrofit a small number of cars and trucks (no VWs), but they DO have 5 3/4" and 7" round, 4 x 6 and 200 mm rectangular lights in both HID projector and bi-x. The modules are fully enclosed, 70mm and they use Phillips D1S capsules and Phillips ballasts. I asked the mfg about retrofitting, and they explained that any use of their products in retrofits could jeopardize their DOT approved status.
This is something I had never encountered before. I just wondered how much interest there might be amongst the 4656/5006/6024/6054 crowd for genuine LEGAL bi-x? Sort of wonder how many old-school owners are even ON this particular forum?
Not that anyone should say such a heretic thing, but one could easily buy any some of the bi-x stuff and just take the modules, electronics, shrouds and bezels and be well set up for a nice retrofit!
Your thoughts?

You're right. Mostly Mk 4 folks here, maybe too young to know what those numbers mean. Those are all headlights I've been trying to forget about, but I do wish I had some of the old cars that use them. I miss my 77 Rabbit, 81 pickup, and 84 Scirocco more and more, particularly when my VR drags me to the gas station.

I'd like to find a way to squeeze some projectors into my B4 headlights, but there's no clear lenses that would fit. I'd have to do the old E36 conversion for that, which I don't particularly like. Oh well, halogens with Vision Plus bulbs and relays!

Yes there is. What you guys don't undersand is that there aren't that many VW's down here, especially in the ******* land of pickup trucks and Nascar. VW established itself in the Northeast and in Canada, where people grew fond of how the beetle trudged through the snow and saved gas. VW's are much more accepted and common up there. Down here you have to drive a good distance to find a dealer if you're not in a big city. So there never were that many sold and not many left. I've been looking for a Jetta coupe forever, they're all up north. I had to go to Jersey to buy my 95 Passat (ebay find). "Kinda car izzat, wunna dem newfangled Vokes-waggins?"

Jeff:
Where I live, the second language IS German. 10x moreso than you might find in WI or thereabouts. On the way into town in morning rush hour, about every fourth car is a Jetta TDI or old TD.
There are pockets of good stuff all over the southwest. Everything A1 up here is long ago gone to cancer, so we drive and tow for the good stuff.

It seems ridiculous, but where I live we also have to drive and tow for the good stuff, not meaning condition but models. In any given year there were maybe 4-5 Jetta coupes sold in Charlotte, and that's the big city! There are plenty of 4-dr Jettas around though. Sales volume did not rise until the B5 Passat came out with Consumer Reports accolades and then the new Mk 4s and NB's. The newer cars are plentiful, but pre-98 Passats like mine are rare here.
