Re: I've got an odd situation involving the heater and idle of my car?????? (Porter87GLI)

you might be putting the slider in the DEF position, which kicks on the AC compressor, which automatically raises the idle..

Re: I've got an odd situation involving the heater and idle of my car?????? (VegasJetta)

i just checked that and it does it on floor, vent, def? is there a switch gone bad an idle valve or something? with it off the car idles fine around 850 hot-1k cold but jumps right up to 2k with the fan on?

I see this as something normal? AM I wrong.

i think u are correct!
my jetta revs when the defroster is on... but not so much when its warm out.
does your car idle fine otherwise? if not it might be your ISV
haha, whenever anyone asks about idle problems thats the first thing i say

Re: (Jeepr21)

The AC comes on only with the little blue snowflakes and windhsield defroster. If it is revving on the other settings too, the ISV could be stuck, or you could have an AC issue. Go look at the AC pulley while it is doing this, the center part only spins when the clutch is enabled (AC on). If it's on on any setting, you might need a new control head (where the switch is).

Re: (Jeepr21)

Your directional flaps are vacuum controlled (a/c only equipped cars). Sometimes when you put the car on front defrost the idle goes up right? If your car has leaks elsewhere it will make your idle worse.I would look for leaks in your vacuum lines under the hood. I had a similar problem on my 88 gli, turned out the vac line on the tb was ripped.

Re: (GLI_DRIVER)

Hey, you're right, I forgot about that, but it would probably only be on a vacuum line inside the dashboard since that is where the lines that control the flaps are. Try disconnecting and blocking off the line that runs to the heater controls (only vacuum line that dissapears into the firewal above the exhaust manifold), and if that helps, it's definitely a leak. YOu could have a broken bulb somewhere (the bulb is a bubble of rubber that is sucked closed to operate the flaps).
EDIT it's the only BLACK line that runs into the firewall! There is a white line that runs into the rain tray on CIS-E cars for the oxygen sensor box. And block off the engine side, obviously

thanks guys i'm gonna start checking all those things after work. also maybe a dumb quest. but what is isv? thanks

the ISV is the Idle Stabilizer Valve. Its located on top of the engine... its a cylinderical looking thing with a plug on the right side, and 2 hoses connected to the other side (on straight on the left, and the other in the back). ya can't miss it! goodluck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
