that's not a TDI. It's the S8/ Gallardo variant.

Damn. The way it was posted, seemed different.
Well, it's all good. A 5.2L TDI would either be too much or too heavy. I'd imagine easily 400hp and like 650-700lbft at least.
I'd be happy with a V6 or V8 TDI making around 300hp and smaller/lighter.

What formula/mix of diesel did Audi run during the race? I am sure it must be something exotic. And what was the R10 fuel consumption compared to other gas-powered cars in its class? The quietness of the engine is amazing.

I bet that sort of info is top secret at Audi, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was 30% or more fuel efficient than the R8's 4.2l V8...which is based on a production block. The V12 TDI is a purpose built race engine.

I'd guess more like 15-20% at best, for high duty cycle racing. The previous was FSI, and running at full throttle 80%+ of the time, it's all about thermal efficiency and CR. With a lot of part throttle, then maybe 20-25% at best.

Re: It's Official: Audi Makes History at Sebring - R10 First Diesel to Win Sebring! (RogueTDI)

I just got back from Florida. I went to the race.
The R10 was visibly faster than every other car so much it's hard to describe. It flat owned. Only one of the DHL Porsches could keep up with it, but it was still never able to challenge.
The weirdest thing about it is that is is dead nuts quiet. The low quiet grunt of the diesel, and the sounds of the turbos make it sound like it's powered by an electric motor.

We went to the race as well.
One of many points of technical interest would be the quietness of the R10.
I hate loud diesel truck noise, especially at night and can hear it near my property from the freeway. Can this technology be transferred to make my life, and many others a little more peaceful, a little less stressful and applied to heavy truck diesels?
All you guys missed a great event. While the field could have been a bit stronger and deeper, the different sounds and different shapes of ALL the cars was worth the price of admission.
Waiting for an Audi TDI in my garage.

McNish And R10 OK
Barry Foster reports that at the end of testing on Tuesday - which began on Monday, with the car that won the Mobil 1 12 Hours - the #2 Audi R10 hit the wall at the exit of Turn 1 at Sebring.
Allan McNish was at the wheel, and in windy conditions, with the suggestion that debris was being blown onto the racing surface, the Scot lost control and hit the tyre wall, with the car ending up on top of the tyres.
He is fine - and the car suffered very modest damage: mainly bodywork. It is believed that the car could have been repaired to run on the (planned) third day if necessary.
Huge relief that race-winning driver is all right - and proof that the R10 might be even more indestructible than the R8.
Three other teams have been testing at Sebring since the race: ACEMCO, Risi Competizione and Petersen-White Lightning.
Audi Sport UK's Martyn Pass adds conisderable detail to this incident - plus other Audi R10 news.
What happened to Allan McNish while testing at Sebring?
About 30 minutes before the end of the private Audi Sport test session at Sebring, Allan spun with the #2 Audi R10 TDI in Turn 1 and crashed rearwards into the tyre wall. When the car hit the tyre wall it turned slowly over and ended upside-down.
Was Allan McNish injured?
No. The car proved to be very safe. Allan is fine, talked to the team over the radio and was able to leave the cockpit on his own.
How badly is the car damaged?
The monocoque is not damaged at all, only the rear of the car (suspension / gearbox etc.). It would have taken about three or four hours to get the car running again, but the test session was anyway almost over.
What caused the accident?
Allan was running on a very fast pace at the moment of the accident. There were heavy and changing winds at Sebring on Tuesday. Allan was simply a touch too fast.
How fast was Allan travelling when he spun?
Over 200 kph.
How does this accident affect the test programme of the R10 TDI?
Not at all. The only problem is that some parts which have been on the car for over 24 hours can't now be examined as planned.
Can you comment the results of the private test session?
As usual, Audi Sport will not comment any private testing results.
When will Audi announce the drivers for the American Le Mans Series?
We plan to announce it next week.

"...The big questions that Audi answered were how much difference would the torque, fuel range, and durability of the diesel engine cars have during the race. The gasoline cars typically stopped for fuel every 35 minutes in the race, while the Audis pitted for fuel every 60 minutes...."
