Re: g60 or 2.0 16v engine in my rabbit gti 83 (rabb187)

I personally have never seen a g60 swapped into a Mk1, or anything other than a Corrado for that matter (one guy on Craigslist was selling a SLC that he threw a built g60 in for some ungodly reason). I know putting a G60 charger on a motor is kinda like strapping a grenade to your ball sack, but I'd like to see it done out of sick fascination. Like when you wish it didn't happen, but you slow down to see the accident anyway.
I encourage you to do it. Just know once you do you've started the 60,000 mile countdown to your engines demise. ****e, maybe I'll do it... Anyone got a G60 motor for me?

i have a g60'd rabbit. The chargers need rebuilds. at regular intervals. I can do a rebuild for less than $300. I can. you may not be able to. If i rebuild my charger every 60k miles, it costs me .005 cents per mile. If i buy a oem oil filter and 4.5 quarts of synthetic oil every 3000 miles , for less than 20 buxs( no way it costs that little), it averages .006 per mile. So over time rebuilding a charger costs less than changing your oil.
I know something that a 16v needs every 60,000 miles too. A new timing belt. If a 16v timing belt breaks your motor is trash. If a g60 blows, 9 times out of 10 you can still drive N/A until you find a replacement charger or suitable alternative.
I have 1100 - 1300 into my g60 motor, it makes a consistant 18 -19lbs boost, in a daily driven vehicle. I did blow a charger once, i made the mistake of believing the PO when he said it was "rebuilt". I replaced it for $100. Rebuilt and reinstalled it. Its ported to within an inch of its life.
The worst problem i have had was when the front motor mount TORE off the already reinforced front crossmember.
Besides, nothing lasts forever.
Patatron can talk trash, his car is insane too....

the opinions are separated...

opinions are opinions.
You asked which of the two. I gave my opinion, you will hear others. But , maybe neither is the best choice.
Think about this, 2.0 8v's have been the base model engine for 11 years now. They are newer than both the g60's and 16v's. There are N/a and FI options for the x-flows. Even though its a turd in a new beetle , it will still rip up the road in a mk1 chassis. Spend the money you save on good suspension and brakes, you'll need them. Maintenance item are cheaper for the x-flows too.
