"fixing" a Greddy Type S BOV busted diaphragm

damnit.. spelled diaphragm wrong in the title.. boo to not being able to change the title after posting.. sorry..
Lots of pics may take a moment to load.. sorry again..
First of all, you'll need to figure out that your BOV is busted. I made a boost tester to find out where I had boost/vac leaks and that lead me to a leaky BOV. Here's the tester which accomodates 3", 2.5" and 2" pipes:

But this thread isn't about a ~$30ish tool.. it's about fixing another critical component in any boosted system.. THE GREDDY TYPE S BOV.... oooh ahhh

1. If you don't know how to use a hex key to open up your BOV, you should be drug out into the street and shot. Here is what mine looks like:

2. If you see daylight through the diaphragm you'll ask yourself "why the F does this piece of S diaphragm cost $70.. It's just a dumb piece of moulded rubber.. my gay boyfriend can crap out a better piece of rubber".. forget that last part..

3. Stretch your diaphragm over a large socket.. I happened to have a 22mm guy laying around from when I upgraded my axels. Note that I also cut away a bunch of the "loose" rubber away from the inner mesh.

4. If that mesh wasn't still there, I wouldn't even try to use this compound to fix the bastard:

5. This is what the thing looked like in the morning:

Working with the compound was tricky, and I thought it was more of a silicon base like a product I used before.. however this stuff seemed to work.
After putting the BOV back together with BOTH springs and also using the lower nipple (hehe I said nipple) the BOV sounds SOOO much better (that comment was for the MKIV forum people).. and better yet, my BOV doesn't leak anymore.. HOORAY I can run 24psi to redline again.. HOORAY..
however, after fixing the BOV I only found that my injector seats leak air and my lower intercooler piping leaked.. yar.. hooray for useful tools!
My Greddy is still working great after ~1000 miles and 4 weeks.. I'll test it again later to make sure it's still holding.
Questions??? Comments???

word. ^
nice writeup man!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Keep us updated on how it works out. I'm just going to a forge valve for now. I'm still too pissed at greddy for having the replacement be $70.

a tire repare patch is too thick for where this hole was..
although the hole looks like it covers a "flat" area when stretched over a socket, the diaphragm has lots of curves which would make the added stiffness of the tire patch a PITA.
The only reason I even attempted the fix is because there is some of that mesh left to hold more silicon material.. otherwise this would have been another spent condom..

Did this this weekend and worked like a charm. Solved part of my boost lag problem. I had a pretty big hole with a small hole in the 'mesh'.
Anyhow two thumbs up.
