Last Thursday went to buy 06 Jetta 2.0T/Package 1.
I had driven Passat...Jetta...GTI. I told my Internet Sales Specialist
that I wanted to buy the Jetta. Declined a price on the net or over the phone, wanted to see me in person.
Sat down and the first thing he told me was they added 3% on to the price because VW did not pay them to prep or clean their cars. $800!
Internet Sales Specialist...all three words are a misnomer.

Re: Repost.................MSRP + 3%! (awilson529)

I can understand him slightly on not giving out a price, since that just gives you a number to shop with. Trust me, it is an easy way to lose business, but it 100% depends on the situation with the customer. I do know for a fact that I can get more done with people in the building, but also, my place isn't like every place else in the world. Experiances vary highly.
But, if he is internet, he (or prob. his boss) is just trying to make a bit more money. Get a target % over invoice that you want to pay, and then hold fast to it till they get close. Now, it is actually easier for you to get to that price when you are in the building, no matter how annoying it is to sit around for a little bit.
Hope that helps a little

I never understood why some places will hold out on quoting you a firm price. If you are informed about what the car's actual cost is and you're not trying to lowball dealerships, you should have no problem getting upfront information. Giving a "number to shop with" is what obtaining quotes is about.
I basically bought my GTI online; shopped for a quote from all dealerships in my area and cross shopped between the two that offered the best price. They were willing to match eachother's price and even beat it to earn my business.
Obvioulsy some dealers told me that the lowest they could go was sticker pricing and told me that "they were not making any money on it"; these were off the list immediately.
And in the end, the dealerships that refused to quote me a price online or over the phone did not get my money.
The one that did was the dealership that was forthcoming with all the information I needed to make a smart purchase which was also the one that offered the best price.
And it wasn't a lowball price by any means. They made their profit, which was fully earned with accomodation towards me and more importantly, honest forthcoming information.

I guess my first post was a little too general. Sounds like you did the right things as a consumer, which netted you a great deal.
Price quotes can be sticky though, but you are right, it was their own fault that they lost your business. You cant cookie cutter that job, you need to examine each situation, and in the situations where you need to give a firm price, even if it will be shopped with, you have to give it. It's to your benefit, and your customers to know where you stand.
However, there are those out there that will cross you off the list without a chance to do anything further, and those are the ones that you need to be careful with. If I have good contact, then I will 100% give a price if I know I'll hear back to have another chance. (everyone can sell them for the same price)

Re: (GTI Dick)

lol, real. it was the cheapest price out of 4 vw dealers, i took the time to go through the dealers inventory so when you show up, you can ask for a specific one. this dealership was also the largest in texas (or was it largest in the nation?).
