Maybe I'm crazy or maybe I've just had a run of "bad" luck with my '06 GLI (in red). I swear though, if a feather or leaf lands on this car, it leaves some sort of ding.
The '02 Jetta 1.8 (Black) I had 3 years and it did not have as many marks as this thing has had in 4 months. Has anyone else noticed this or did I just get a bad paint job?

I've been having the same thought. I think the paint was thicker on my prior VWs which made chipping harder but on my new GTI I've already got a chip

Paint coat seems thinner. On my Color Concept beetle you honestly saw a shadow being cast through the clearcoat if something was on it.

Re: Is the paint on the '06s not as durable? (GTI 4 RD)

I'm planning on starting to fix the chip today so I'll try and get a photo. My camera sucks at closeups though so I dunno how it will come out. Its a typical small chip though.

Make sure your macro option is on, if you have it.

I'll try and get some photos. The car needs to go in for some body work next week. Some jerk thought it would be funny to throw a bottle at the car a couple weeks ago.
Maybe it was just the fact I was looking closely at the paint (because I was at the body shop) that I noticed the paint dings - but every place there is a nick, the damage has taken away the paint.

I really love my MkV.
But the paint is very thin and brittle. Easy to scratch, easy to flake and chip. The door panels are soft too. I dinged a door with a rubber hose while washing the car. (it was caught and I gave it a jerk, and it unexpectedly hit the door)
My '01 Toyota'paint job was a lot tougher than my 2.5 Jetta.

I noticed how soft the doors were when I was waxing my car....I was flexing the doors so I eased off on the pressure...

Here's the best pic I could get of my chip. Its a bit to the right and a 3rd of the way up on the hood. I started repairing it today so I'll let you know how the primer/touchup/clearcoat/wetsand fixup kit goes for me.

My gli has plenty of chips in the paint thanks to all the road construction around here... Im definitely going to buy the 3m clear bra

Yea...tempted to get that myself but wouldn't have helped in this case. The extended bra doesn't go this far up from what I could tell http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Re: Is the paint on the '06s not as durable? (AirmanPika)

the paint quality on mine seems pretty good, although at school, and I - 35 driving it has taken a bit of abuse

looks great still but its got some chips dings and scratches.

I think the quality of the paint is very good. Maybe a little soft. Any car will get chips and dings. The only thing you can do is keep your distance in traffic (in NJ someone will cut in front of you

) and or get some kind of front end cover. There is just so much traffic, construction, and big trucks today kicking up rocks and other debris.
As soon as VW driver gear comes out with a vinyl bra for the MK5 I will get one for hwy trips. I used one on my last GTI with a lot os success. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
