I have a 2002 Audi TT 225quattro with 51K miles and I am going to be putting on new rotors and pads maybe next weekend. I have never done this before so I was wondering how hard a job it is and if I need any special tools, etc. Also is there anything I need to be careful of when putting everything back together?... all advice is much appriciated

I am still searching and trying to find out everything that I can on my own but it always helps to have you guys advice, thanks in advance

Re: Getting ready to do a brake job on the car, help and advice are appriciated (VWdriver03)

The brakes on these cars are very easy to change. Tools you will need:
breaker bar with 17mm socket (to remove wheels)
7mm hex wrench
brake cleaner
piston tool of some sort
Needlenose pliers for spring clips
Phillips head screw driver
If you are doing the rears you will need 2 wrenches (13mm and 15mm IIRC)
Correct piston tool for VW (pushes in and turns piston at the same time)

Hardest part for me was damn spring clip for the pads. Id htink I was getting it seated right and then it would pop out and Id have to go looking for it.

also a trick to remove the rotor set screw if you dont have an impact screwdriver. just take a regular screw driver, or a center punch and then hammer that into the center of the screw, then it will unscrew easy. w/o impacting it first 90% of the time you will just strip it and have to just rip the rotor off leaving the shaft of the screw in the hub.
dont worry if you strip it/have to pop the screw head off, its only there for convience and does not effect the braking system at all. all it does is hold the rotor aligned with the hub for easy of putting the wheel back on.

Great, thanks for all the info... but what about the piston tool, where can I get one, do I have to have it for the job?
Yeh I went with the slotted/drilled rotors, I think it will look great on the car, I plan to paint the calipers as well

Autozone has a loan-a-tool program, and they carry a universal kit for compressing / rotating the pistons on the rear calipers. I've never done brakes on a VW before but I used this kit on a Mustang and it worked great.
Hopefully this "universal" kit is also compatible with VW calipers.

Re: (VWdriver03)

I was just checking everything out today, and it looks like the bolts that hold the caliper onto the car are very rusted and are like bonded on there... Any ideas on how to get them unstuck? And before I can even attempt to get the rears loose, I will have to find a tool to fit the bolts on the rear calipers

Thanks banditt007 for the tip on how to get the rotor screw loose, worked great http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (VWdriver03)

to hold one of the rear nut head type things for the rear calipers you need a SLIM 15mm wrench i think it is, normal ones will fit but not very well and it will be very tight.
buy a can of this(PB BLASTER), and soak it on the bolts prior to loosening. let sit for ideally at least an hour. more time/more soaking the better. puts liquid wrench and wd40 to shame for a penetrating oil. remember too, leverage is yoru friend.

Also when you are working on the front driver side brakes turn the wheels all the way to the right. and when working on the front passenger side turn the wheels all the way left. gives you mucho easier access to the caliper carriers.

Re: (VWdriver03)

I assume pressing the brake pedal is the correct way to do it
Image

I guess it just takes a little working with it to figure it out... for a while there I felt like a monkey trying to fit the square block through the triangle shaped hole

Now I just need to take some time to work on the rear ones.

Re: (VWdriver03)

The front calipers sometimes get stuck because of brake dust. Hose them down with brake cleaner and it should come off. To compress the caliper you just need to push the piston back into the caliper. Ive seen people use a c clamp, but if you have the tool for the rear just use that.

Re: (NOVAdub)

ok... got everything but the rotors off. I am assuming you have to remove that center thing to get the rotors off... is this correct??
