Kwire in stereo for 98+ cars??

I was told to check this forum out, so here it goes:
I put a '96 radio in my '99 gti. And i recently came across a note in my bently that said you shouldnt hook up a "deluxe" stereo to the newer "sound system" because of some K-wire that allows the diagnostics to talk to the radio. So, obviously the CEL is on, and i dont know how to get rid of it? I took the radio out for now, do you think it will reset after a few starts? Whats me best plan of attack? thanks

yea, i did read that. And i understand the problem. And i know if i wanted to plug the radio back in to remove the #3 wire. But i am just goin to go to a local guy and trade radios for the newer style. I just want the CEL to go away

You should not get a CEL from removing the radio. Unless you did something wrong. I have done dozens of VAG cars and have never had a problem with CEL's
On some of the older plug-in stereo harness the K-line was tied to 12V and it would burn the K-line interface chip it the VAG scan tool. The newer harness don't have this problem.

alrite, i was just confused as to what would be causing it though. I took it to autozone to get the codes scanned but it couldnt read anything. Is that cuz the older radio was blocking something? Should i take it back now that the radio is out and see if anything changed?

No. You should get a VAG-COM and DIY!

bump this.
1997 GLX
i had an aftermarket headunit with no issues.
put in a deluxe audio radio from a earlier model.
didn't work so i put the factory radio back in.
a few days later the CEL came on.
autozone scan tool scanned it.
no connection
vagcom'd it, wire was lighting up green but not communicating with the car.
what's wrong?
