I went into Pulix today around lunch time to get a sub from the deli came out and my driver side of the back bumper was on the ground. No one around and no witnesses. So I called the Police and waited for nearly two hours because this was not an emergency I was not a priority. The cop said we don't touch this, he got in his car and drove off. This whole day is a waist. I'll have to go to Stuttgart International (Best body shop in South Florida) Get a rental and wait for it to be fixed.

DAMN! I feel for ya bud...for what it's worth, Karma never fails...what comes around, goes around...and believe me, I've been around long enough to know that Karma is one merciless bitch when it comes to payback time! The only thing that sorta sucks is you're usually never there to witness the payback, so you just gotta have faith...then again, Karma may be visiting you because...?

Well, you got insurance, right...?

I've had friends who found note on the windshield after digned- except the note just had bogus scribbling. Apparently, the offender had witnesses, so they felt compelled to leave a (pretend) note so the witnesses wouldn't. Now that is LOW.

Re: Got smacked today (ph7)

Sounds like yesteday was a real bad day. I got hit aslo. Rear ended by a teenager in a pickup truck. I was very luck not to have submarined into the pickup in front of me. The damage is not too bad but I need a new bumper cover, dent pushed out in trunk lid, and spoiler repainted.
Best of luck. Sounds like I got off easy.

1. Put a baseball bat in your trunk
2. get a paint sample from where the other car made contact with yours
3. keep an eye out for cars with scraps with your cars color on it.

(also from a legal standpoint the police have a duty to file a damage/accident report when your property is damaged. Many insurance companies require such reports as proof of damages and will not just send out a claims adjuster. To complain about this write a letter to the mayor's office or local paper but more importantly a letter to your state's attorney general. They have an established enforement mechanism to deal with consumer complaints against companies as well as municpalities who arent doing what they are legally obligated to do.)

Incorrect, actually. Police don't have a legal obligation to take reports. Some police departments may have rules and regulations that instruct police to take property damage reports, but many don't. In most metropolitan areas, cops don't take reports for property damage like this, and I frankly think they have much better things to be doing. Where I live, the county has a website where you submit a petty theft or non-injury property damage report through a website. No one ever investigates or calls you - you just have a record.
But the insurance co. can't fault you if the local policy is not to bother cops with paperwork that doesn't help catch criminals. If the insurance company asks if you filed a report, you can say you called it in, but your jurisdiction doesn't take reports.

Re: Got smacked today (ph7)

DC police won't come out UNLESS there are injuries.
If the insurance company requires a police report, you can just fill one out yourself at the police station after the fact. The one I filled out a couple years back said attestation was under penalty of law (not surprisingly). I'd assume this would be the same for any other locality's police report forms. So, if you lied on the police report, the insurance company could hold that against you pretty effectively.

Re: Got smacked today (DCdave)

Well it is a state police power issue, so i guess it is different from state to state. But it is always good to have the police report because if you ever find the guy who did it, you need documentation of harm to file a legal claim.
Where I live the police would never get away with that BS. Violent crime is the priority of course, but hit-and-run accidents are illegal just as speeding, traffic citations and noise violations are; things they enforce rigorously.

Re: Got smacked today (CT-passat)

I'm sure it varies from state to state and maybe even from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In Virginia, the police do not investigate accidents on private property (like parking lots) except in the case of (as I recall) hit & run with injuries and one other circumstance, might have been DUI.
Be careful on private property, they can be a free-for-all as far as accidents go and you might get stuck holding the bill.
