I've bought an e30 recently, since I live in Europe the tach says 210000 kilometres. The engine runs smooth and seems to have lost nothing of it's original power. What an incredible car,it's really fun.I'd give it go if the body is still ok. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (IDrinkBeer)

heres the truth on bmws and their motors, if it was warmed up properly and hasnt been abused and ran synthetic oil for most of its like, its just waking up. I just pulled apart an m50tu which is a 1993-95 325is motor with vanos variable valve timing and rebuilt it for a friend of mine. The motor had 110k on it and he pulled it apart for rebuild for turbo and at 110k the hatch markings on the cylinders were still there. Ive seen 1.8t with 30k that didnt have that. Get a compression and leakdown and buy that thing up. There gettin rarer and rarer. Drive it with mobil 1 oil and change the dif and trans every 25k with redline synthetics and it will run forever. And the m50 swap is not a simple plug and play it requires dif 5 series oil pan wiring dif coolant lines. Just hit http://www.r3vlimited.com and hit the forums they love m20 motors. Plus a used m20 is under a grand for a low mileage one.-jason

If you find a cheap e30 in good condition, go for it. You can always sell it and be back in a mk2 with money to spare for suspension &/or wheels. Having just bought an e30 (sold my jetta to buy it), I am very pleased with her.
I say pick up the e30, your golf doesn't appear too modified yet so do it while you're not in too deep in VW! Oh and change the timing belt the minute you get it just to be safe.

Re: (8vMeX)

before man- determines engine condition, compression test checks compression from pistons in the motor to determine much pressue they push out and leakdown from cylinder is done after that both before car purchase bimmerworks in west chester pa is the place to go for both such things pm me if u want the number-jason

The M20 is notorious for going half a million miles without problems. I would look for burning oil out the exhaust. If you dont see that and it drives strong, go for it.
I just put down 324 whp on my completely stock m20 with 14 psi and 140k miles!

You wont regret getting in an e30.

I'm sorry, but if you used turbo to get 324 whp (doubtful, but what do I know), that engine is far from stock

IMO, E30's are nothing unless its an M3. Keep the 8v GTI http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
You sir are an idiot. 325is= rwd, 170hp, 2700lbs wet and look amazing. E30s are easy as hell to work on so if you are mechanicaly inclined go for the e30. It all depends how much you love your golf though.

2nd to the high miles on the E30, thats my biggest thing holding me back..

i love my golf...i just put corrado seats in and planed on lowering it but its burning soo much oil, and the lack of power is killing me.. if the BMW drives ne thing like the golf im afraid i'll love it, and get rid of the golf too fast and regret it latter.. (sigh)wish i could keep both but my dad won't let that happen... such a hard decision

Re: my dream E30 situation:( (8vMeX)

buy the e30.... you'll love it instantly... I just bought an 84 318i... I love it.... it has the equivalent of the 8v engine in it with slightly higher hp than what I had when I had my golf... the only drawback for me has been that the 318i is a slush-o-matic... it does have some other issues, but mostly cosmetic and easily fixed. I miss my golf, but mostly for the 5 speed... I don't miss the electrical gremlins that were haunting me... and with it being rwd already, I won't have to do too much fabrication should I decide to put a different engine in it.

Re: (8vMeX)

If you look through the majority of my posts, youd see I am a little biased about e30s, as I owned one for the first 4 years I could drive. I will tell you this, I LOVE my 1995 Corrado but it feels like 1/2 the car my 87 325is did. VW cannot keep up with the build quality of bmws simply because their cars were 2/3 the price, they obviously had to skimp somewhere in comparison. IMO VW makes great cars, but no one can hold a candle to the ultimate driving machine.
