I got my first ticket driving the R. I got caught doing 90 in a 65 on the NJ Turnpike half an hour before arriving to NYC. I havn’t had a single speeding ticket in the past 5 years. It’s actually pretty funny because I finally decided to use my new radar detector before my trip up to NY. I thought those things were supposed to help you NOT get tickets?? WTF??? The laser alarm went off and before I had a chance to slow down he was already behind me with his lights flashing. Anyways, the cop pulls me over and asks me how fast I thought I was going. I told him I wasn’t exactly sure 80-85 maybe. I also said that we were really late for my cousins wedding we were going to in NYC. He said he clocked my twice once going 88 and then 90. So I tell him again that we are very late for a wedding (which we really were) and that I usually never speed (which I never do). He goes back to his car and writes me a ticket for going 90 in a 65. The ticket doesn’t say how much the fine is or how many points. I have a court date next month in Union County, NJ which is 3.5 hrs away from where I live. Can anyone who has any experience with NJ Traffic Courts give me some advice about what to expect in court? Is it worth driving all the way up there? Do they usually reduce the points if you show up? Also, is it a good idea to try and talk to the officer before court? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: It finally happened (muratti)

I've been pulled over numerous times for dumb things usually. Only once for speeding like that.
I've heard of if you request to see the gun and that they did indeed shoot you with radar/lidar they have to show you the gun. They keep records of this apparently. If there are no records it gets thrown out or so I hear.
Even with K40 or the V1, or passport lidar is too fast for you to hear the signal from the detector and slow down. By the time you begin to comprehend what is happening it's already too late. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
I hope everything gets solved and you get off easy, i'm not sure what the points are on that in NJ but here it's something like 3+ points and they usually give reckless driving tickets for 20 over IIRC.

never admit you were speeding because you were late. insta-ticket.

x2. If you do admit you're running late, they'll take even more time to write out the ticket, just to make sure you're even later.

Here's the NJ point list.
You were issued a ticket for 90 in a 65, so 25 MPH over the limit, here's your penalty:
39:4–99 Exceeding maximum speed 15-29 mph over limit - 4 points.
Ouch.
Definitely try to talk to the officer before court, if possible. They will usually plead you down in the interest of reducing points, and you're likely to get a good deal since you have a clean record. You probably won't get all 4 points taken off though. You can go take a defensive driving class which will take 2 points off, so you might be able to get yourself back down to 0 points.
The fine will be a bit hefty, and you'll probably have to pay it, plus a $200+ court surcharge just to get to court. It's complete and total extortion.

Re: (truenthusiast)

This is my experience (albeit I was in WA State at the time ... speed so much more now.... and never get any tickets around here)
1. contact a recommended lawyer that specialises in these cases. Talk specifics and the cost / benefit of paying a lawyer versus the increased premium on your insurance, etc..... IMO its better to pay the lawyer.... you may want to find a lawyer in the area that you were ticketed as you may have to cover his/her travel expenses.
2. Mike is right about the radar detector issue
3. Out of curiosity .... which detector were you using?
Despite all the money I have spent on my v1 I find that scanning the cars ahead for braking is probably the best hint that there may be a cop ahead.
Again.. talk to a traffic lawyer.... ask for a free consultation. If they dont do free consultations.... move on to another one....
Keep us posted!!

I have to admit I dont understand the point system out here..... does that automatically **** up your insurance?

Not sure about Jersey, but here in PA, 25 and over is 6 points on your record and a definite court appearance and IIRC possibly a suspension of license or mandatory driver safety course.
Definitely try to talk to the cop before the hearing. Usually they will give you that option. And, sometimes you can even settle it with the court clerk, or so I've read. Otherwise, try to plead it down during the hearing.
I got popped too, back in May for doing 80 in a 55. I was looking at 4 points. Talked to the cop before the hearing, and got it bumped down to 10 over the limit and 2 points on my record. But, that was here in PA. Anyway, good luck. Hope it turns out for the better. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

x2. If suddenly everyone starts braking, boom, cop. A lot of times they don't even have radar/laser on, they just sit there to keep traffic in check and look for blatant infractions.
It also really helps if you know the roads. For example, I know better than to ever speed on 76-Westbound past the Girard Avenue on-ramp...there's always a cop (recently one in a Dodge Charger) sitting up there, looking for people who fly past the on-ramp. On 476 NB, they love to sit behind the sound-deflection walls, right at the very end. You'll never see them until you're past them.
Shame they do all of this crap for revenue generation.

What kind of detector did you get, out of curiosity?
Generally, if they're using laser, it's pretty tough to get an advanced warning.

I was using a Cobra XRS9430. After doing some research I found out that laser guns only work if they are being used at a stationary position. The cop was definitely not stationed on the side of the road because I didn't pass him. He must have been following me from a distance and used the laser gun while his vehicle was in motion. Do you think this is a reason to plead not guilty?

A license suspension in NJ requires more points than this incident warrants, fortunately; 12 points for a suspension.

Being a jersey resident and unfortunately victim to numerous speeding citations I may be able to give you a little knowledge. 1st, it's unfortunate that you're a MD resident as that usually doesn't help anything. However, in Jersey there is an usafe driving citation that most people can get instead of points for speeding. The fine is steeper, especially for you and it is totally up to the prosecutor about how much and if he wants to give it to you. You can do this yourself by showing up a little early for court and talking with him or the mediator. You should also consider that with state to state, points don't always follow. I have had a few speeding tickets in PA and they come across as unspecific violations without points for NJ DMV. Good ole Jersey for you. They'll try to rape you coming and going every hour of every day

Yeah, in PA it's 6 points, but you have to be cited for wreckless driving as well, in order to have your license suspended. But, that doesn't hold true for the driver safety course. I'm pretty sure that's required, though I could be mistaken.

Re: (muratti)

Wait, is your license from Maryland? If so, then the points issue becomes a completely different story. You need to figure out if Maryland participates in a point-sharing situation with other states.
For example, as a NJ driver, I'll get 2 points on my license for an infraction in one of 44 other states. I cannot recall if this is on top of points I might get from that state as well, or substitution for those points (I want to say the latter). Maryland might have the same type of setup, which means you may get a lower number of points anyway...
It also means you'll have to look into your own state's defensive driver programs, if they offer any, etc.
This is the kind of stuff that I hate, every state is different, it makes things very, very complicated. Especially up here in the NE where you can be in 4 different states in 2 hours.

Re: It finally happened (muratti)

A few days before your court date, you can call the court and tell them you need the date posponed. This will by you extra time to face the music. I think you can do this several times. They will tell you if you can move it gain after that. You can use the excuse of being so far away and not being prepaired. Good luck.

My sweetheart got a speeding ticket (20 over) down in the Fla. Keys when we were on a scuba diving trip (we live in arizona). She called them and was able to take an on-line (internet) driving course and when she completed it, they tossed the ticket. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Somewhat similar thing happened with my father. He got a ticket in Maine, lives in AZ, and he took an AZ driving school class and mailed the certificate to Maine and that got everything tossed.

Re: It finally happened (verustung)

if u go, they will prolly knock off the points but you will pay up the arse for it...since my insurance doesnt go up b/c of accidents and tickets, my logic has been to just pay it and take the points...that is if you dont already have some points which it doesnt sound like you do....as long as i dont get many tickets my insurance will renew each year...pretty nice...
tho if you have insurance where the rate will increase do to points, then you gotta try and fin out how much it will increase, and if that would cost mroe or less than going to court and pretty much "paying off you points"
