My VR6 is a daily driver and I am a college student, so I'm looking for some mods that will make me run a bit quicker but at the same time won't sacrifice life on the engine. So no F/I, nitrous, etc. I'm just looking for mods that will get me a little more go without sacrificing any reliability. Any help is appreciated. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Yeah drill the airbox, get a giac chip, lower it, strut bars, weld in a straight pipe in place of the suitcase muffler (huge mofo under the rear seats, in front of the rear wheels) All will help you either go fast in a line or around a corner. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I'm in the same boat... As you can see by my sig. I already have a modded air box and Giac. My car is getting bodywork done right now (my dad backed into it

) but when I get it back I will be taking it to a shop to get the suitcase removed. Sometime early this summer I will be buying a new suspension (probably Weitec GT or an H&R cup kit). Not sure how much more I will be able to do while still saving for college.
The car runs sooo much better with the Giac and sounds sooo much better with the drilled air box. I'm hoping that removing the suitcase will appease my desire for an exhuast for a while.

I have a daily driver as well. I just threw on a Schrick Intake Manifold and a pair of 268 cams with the Garrett cam chip and it is like a whole new car. Really not that expensive either. If interested, call Ron at Denon Performance in Canada (no sales tax & cheapest prices!). The manifold has two stages so you get good low end torque and if you want to run hard, it has a valve that opens up just after 4000 (2nd stage) that will put you back in your seat. Give it some thought. It all worked out VERY well for me! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Not that expensive? For a student, $1200+ for a VGI, plus ~$600 for cams, $130 for the chip, plus install is a lot of money.

Re: No worries VR6 mods? (rocket vr6)

Dude you need to realize that not every one has a spare car.
OR can finish a demanding install like that in one night/day/weekend. I strangly enough find that every time I take my car apart I find more stuff to replace.
Inability to do work on a VR6 HARDLY makes you a poseur. I can't and I'm pretty sure I could strip and A1/A2 before you figured out the model/year from the outer panels.

quote:

What do you mean, plus $$ for the INSTALL. What are you a poser? Do it yourself, it's like bonding or something. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

You mean you don't grind your own cams?!?!

You have 22 posts......it's ok, I'll let it slide
If I could do the job on my car, I would. Unfortunately, my car is my daily, and I don't have enough days off in a row to install something big like cams/vgi in one day. Especially since I'm not going to go run out and buy a ton of tools just to use them once. You only pay the shop once, and they do it right since they're trained. This isn't saying I don't do any work on my car, I installed my mk4 looks, and my HID's, and my turn 2 and the strut bars, plus the major PITA install of the midknightmotorsport BPC brace. Speaking of posers.....I think it's time someone went back to clubsi

I agree with germanrox, and think its also important to add that if you pay a shop to do it then they are liable for anything that goes wrong. If you are taking the engine apart and something bad happens you are screwed. I'm sure even the best mechanics make mistakes or screw up sometimes. If you take it to a shop they are responsible for the damage and the cost of repair. Plus I know I would be really mad at myself if I screwed something up and ended up costing myself more money then it would have been to take it somewhere and have a trained mechanic do it for me.

Not to be rude or anything, but I'd be REAL interested in finding out what the drilled airbox mod is...Could someone give me a hint? Or, better yet, could anyone explain the idea? I thank you very much...So would my Passat.

It's a simple concept. You take a drill and the biggest drill bit you can find and make like swiss cheese on the front and fender sides of your airbox. Then throw a K&N panel filter in there and listen to the cool sounds your motor makes. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Pulling from behind the headlight and through the fender does not pull hot air, it pulls cool air. A while ago there was a guy that did a test between this and a p-flo, and the p-flow pulled air that was over 40 degrees hotter than the drilled airbox. It works because the airbox acts like a heatshield. I just drilled holes on the fender side of the box and it works well, plus gives it that cool sound, for free!

Re: No worries VR6 mods? (germanrox)

Can you guys instruct me on HOW the HELL you get the box out of the car? I took the top part off and bout had a stroke getting it back on. It's soo tight on the Passat to get it to go in right. What all should I remove and get out of the way when taking the airbox out?

I'm sure someone in the Passat forum could tell you. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: No worries VR6 mods? (Pilotman28)

First unplug the MAF sensor, then unhook the two clips that hook the top of the airbox to the maf. After that, there should be a clip on the front and back of the box holding the lid down securely, unclip those, and pull the top off. It really can't be any more pinched in there than the mk3 vr6's, and I can pull my whole box and replace it in about 5min. Practice makes perfect!
