stay out of the boost and under 4k rpms and you'll get GREAT milage... as soon as you get into the boost at high revs... forget it..
I got 200 miles to my first tank after getting chipped... since then I pay a LOT more attention to the needles (boost & tach).

does the GIAC X+ get installed with the "touchless" flashloader , or on the actual ECU via a chip (hardware) ?

They hook up a cable to your ODBII port and re-program your ECU, no disassembling or removing anything.
Regardless of which tuner you choose whether it be APR, GIAC, Revo, or another--mileage should be exactly the same as stock if you drive it like a grandma since really no boost is being applied.
I run GIAC X+ and I usually average close to 20MPG, just shy of 300 miles per tank. I decidedly do not drive like a grandma, and I'm stuck in traffic or at a stop light 50% of the time which kills mileage just as bad or worse than my lead foot. On longer highway trips when I'm shooting for good mileage, I easily get over 30MPG.

Then why bother? I don't get that great of mileage stock-about 18-20 unless I let Grandma drive.....when your using 4,000 rpm and up and down the gears.....

does modifying the ECU (APR, GIAC, etc) have any adverse effects in the long run ?

Nothing really at all, its all still within "safe" parameters of the engine/vehicle.
As for mileage differences, in stock mode on my 50 mile each way commute to work I average around 29.8-30.5MPG; in chipped mode around 31-32MPG, and in race gas mode 31.5-32.5

I dunno about increased/deceased mileage with the chip but I am noticing a small increase in mileage since I put on my AWE exhaust. Would that be expected???? My overall is hovering around 25 mpg. I don't drive that much on the highway so it's a little low. I also get on it pretty good on a regular basis.
