Friend of mine just bought a 91 525i. Low miles, grandma-owned...literally. 77k miles. Interior is in great shape for what he paid, but it will need paint very soon. Anyway, when standing around the back of the car, there's a strong smell of gasoline, but we can't see any evident leaks. Is there anything else it could be? I checked the seal on the gas cap, and it seems to be fine.

the fuel filler neck is probably rotted out, you'll need a new rubber piece that goes around the neck and mabye a new fuel/breather hose
also check the fuel pump, it should be on top of the fuel tank which i think in the 5 seriers is still accessable undnerneith the back seat, sometimes the rubber o ring is worn or not seated properly

Fuel pump is accessible through the trunk, I believe. There's an access panel for something back there anyway

Is it possible the expansion tank is clogged and not draining?
