I've been thinking about putting on some steelies and winter tires on my Poolitre and I've been pricing out setups online and I'm shocked at the Massive price difference in tires WTF what gives this is stupid.
I know all about buying locally and the Buying power of the U.S. but the price difference is insane
take this for example
1010 Tires (Canada)
Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsport - 195/50R15 82 H a set of 4 = $503.96 canadian + taxes and Shipping
Tire Rack (U.S.)
Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsport - 195/50R15 82 H a set of 4 = $236.00
Canadian + Taxes and Shipping
even Shipping and duties there is no way its going to equal out the $267.96 variance in price. WTF thats Insane
I mean its Cheaper for me to head to Niagara Falls Ny and put 15" BBS RGR's with winter tires than it is to buy steelies and winter tires up here in Canada.
someone please tell my why I shouldn't drive to the US for wheels and tires and save myself $100's of dollars ?

Re: Why do Tire Prices Suck so bad in Canada (PrupleGTI)

I guess it can be explained via simple economics. Based on the prices, one can assume that the quantity of tires supplied to the US is greater than the quantity demanded which would equate to lower prices where in Canada, it could be the opposite due to a smaller population(market). The quantity supplied might be lower than what the market demands which would cause the prices to go up. Companies are baised towards bigger markets

Paul, I agree... it's freakin ridiculous!!!!!!!
But why are you looking for 15's for the 2.0? 185/60/14 on the current wheels you have on would be quite a bit cheaper...

I could understand the Econ101 viewpoint if we were discussing prices of tires in the Maritimes or Sask. but the reality is that there is a TON of demand in Southern Ontario. There are millions of cars and drivers here, and we all use tires. There is no reason why the price in Western New York would be that much less. How could the supply/demand of the million or so people there result in lower prices than for the 5 million in the GTA?
Tax, duty, shipping and supply/demand do not justify the doubling of price shown above.

Opportunity cost.
Is your time, fuel, wear and tear worth it?
If so, then go for it.
One way to decrease your opportunity cost is to lump a US trip for other items in with the trip for tires.

it was the only common tire Brand / Size I could find to compare
Not only do we get crappy prices we also get less selection and the brands we do get don't offer all the model's of tires that are out there

I called tireworld for the same size tire I posted (Using the 195 50 15 as a benchmark) they want $345.00 for 4 no name tires the part that really gets me is we get these cheap brands at the same price the Americans get the better brand tires for.
Perhaps if the Manufacturer's looked at their Price points and realized then We could get some price corrections
I mean this is not the same case for wheels the prices are identical fo wheels why are Tire prices so outrageous

Just make sure you go on a rainy day and lose it with your bald tires on the way down.

A very wise man once told me...
Buy local. Support Canadian Economy.
I think it was a pruple yeti who said it everytime someone comes on here and rants about CDN prices being higher than US prices.

This is hardly a rant I'm merely asking a discussion / question that I'm hoping someone can answer
Trust me I completely understand the differences between the U.S. and Canadian Prices. I deal with global clients the prices we sell out units in the US varies to Canada.
I will support the Local economy to a certain point and this is that point. this is not a tiny economic adjustment because of Supply and demand that's the difference in price of the new Passat.
The difference in Tire Pricing is 46% that's not an S&D adjustment

but see the thing is everyone here has posted up the same things
Supply & demand
that's the way things are
Let me roll over and take it in the hoopta because I'm Canadian

Somebody convince me that I shouldn't cross the border at the queenston Lewsiton Bridge and stop at one to the local tire shops on military rd in NY ?

Let's do it.
I'm almost out of Coors beer, so I'll come with.

Re: Why do Tire Prices Suck so bad in Canada (PrupleGTI)

I've stopped trying to figure it out, instead I buy my tires from south of the boarder. I don't care for the reasoning behind it, it is still ridiculous, regardless of the size of the market.
