I bought a Royal Blue Pearl 2007 SE V6 Accord today, trading in my '99 Passat GLS. My B5 has 116k miles on it and the Accord was just too good a deal to pass up for $21,300 including destination and dealer fees (over $500 below invoice of $21,043).
The SE V6 is the sweet spot in the Accord line, imo, and I bet their price will increase throughout the year as more people find out about them. This is the first year Honda has made the SE V6 and since Honda is retooling the Accord in 2008, this is the ONLY year it will be made before the remake comes out. I think that Honda finally broke the threshold of acceptable styling with the '07 model Accord. Handsome, understated, not flashy but definitely stylish. It's styling reminds me more of the B5 than the B6 does.
This Accord is about as close as I can get to the B5 Passat, both in price and feel. Since my wife and I will always love that car, that was one of my goals in buying our next car. I find it pretty amazing that I can get a car of this quality for this price, since I bought my Passat in 1999 for ~$21K (including destination and dealer fees) and that was a floor model with 5-6k miles on it.
I am sad that I just couldn't find a VW that met my (and my wife's) needs at a good price. The B6 Passat just doesn't have it, IMHO--not in styling, reliability, handling (down a notch from the B5), or value for the dollar. I test drove the GLI, and that's just not the car for me or my wife at ages 55-60. It didn't feel as roomy or comfortable as the Accord for longish drives and the visibility/sightlines were poor. (But it was alot of fun to drive!) And there's no way I could get much closer than $3000 (more) in price if I went for the GLI DSG.
I hope to own a VW diesel at some point in the future, but that won't be for several years now that I have the Honda.
