Re: keys for MKIV GTI (R.GTI)

So far as i know, No. When they program you a new FOB they give us the Remote from our MK4 generation, not the new ones. Not sure though. I had a new FOB made for me and i got the older looking rounded button remote.

Re: keys for MKIV GTI (R.GTI)

Well, not to be a pain, but those ARE mk 4 keys.
They're an extra option in europe, where they can open your boot for you. The keys are used on the mk 5 too. Difference :
Mk4 : Push tailgate button (middle button) : boot pops up, but it's still almost closed. You have to pull it to open it, and close it yourself
Mk5 : Push tailgate button (middle button) : boot pops up and opens up all the way. Push button again, tailgate closes all the way, and locks again.
So yeah, you can use these keys for your mk4. You have to take them to the dealer and have them reprogrammed for your car, along with, that they have to pass through the cutting of the keyblade, which VW commonly does not offer. Only if they deliver the keys.
Reason is that it's "common" for remote controls to loose their coding, if treated very poorly. So they do take care of coding them, which you have to lay down a bundle of bills to get done, but the cutting of the key isn't something they offer you to get done.
Also, the function on this button wont work, unless the control module + wiring in your car is prepared for it.
As a different line of thought, I'm going the other way with mine. I want to examine, if it's possible to use the 3rd button for another function but nicking into the relay output on the control module, so instead of it opening the tailgate, I want a comfort button.
It'll work similar to a remote start button. Only integrated in the OEM remote. (I'll obviously change the symbol on the remote to something more appropriate.)
So that way, when I leave the car in winter season, the climate control will be at e.g. 23 degrees, and the heat in the front seats at step 3.
Then when the car starts up, it'll heat up the seats and cabin.
In summer, the climate will be e.g. 20 degrees, and the heated seats will be off, so the car resumes to that.
I might figure some way of installing a module in, so that the button has to be pressed for at least e.g. 3 seconds before the car accepts and starts, so it wont just start up accidently. Also, if such a module will be installed, I'm probably going to add another mode, by pressing button twice in quick succesion, which will turn on rear lights (maybe + rear foglights), indicators all around the car permanently and highbeam (Car has xenon lighting, that's why no lowbeam), along with some other lighting I've made, which I don't care to discuss here, kinda wanna keep it my private idea

Also this will be done with a switch that requires the car to be in neutral to start.
The reason for all this, is that I want the same options, as I can get from an aftermarket remote start, but without having a gay-looking second remote tagged to my car keys. And I know all of this is possible, but of course, it requires using such aftermarket components, just not their remote, and it also requires knowing where and what to do to the car, to make it work. The car has to work in 20 years too

But that's just to inspire you a little onwards. I never really found much use for the tailgate "unlocker" button, as you still need to grap the tailgate. You might aswell use unlock button, as far as I can tell.

Re: keys for MKIV GTI (Nicoleise)

Thanks for the reply! Are remote start would not only be handy but fun to use ha. So i which key would i get from the dealer? The one that opens the hatch? or the one that doesnt?

Re: keys for MKIV GTI (R.GTI)

That would depend ?
IF you want to add the feature or not. It'll require some more work, and I'm not sure your control module is prepped for it, even though it seems like it from the wiring diagrams.
But check with your dealer, if those keys will work. I can only be this certain, since I work on a euro Jetta, and all my knowledge of VWs comes from the european versions

I've come to learn there's alot of difference
