Re: fuba antenna (jettanick)

you can get the complete kit from germanautoparts.com for like $57 it includes the base, mast, nut and wiring. Make sure you get the amplified one or else you won't get any reception. as for the hole in the fender, you can go to a local hardware store and get a plastic plug, just make sure to put some touch-up paint around the edge so it doesn't rust

Re: fuba antenna (VeeDubMan54)

I just got an Non amplified one last week for $30 with wire to replace my front fender one.
Does this really Suck or am I not going to notice the difference.
I have the Base from the Antenna on a 90 GLI with wireingf and it had the extra wire so i think it is amplified.
>Can I use this with My new Mast?
>How do you mount the "Amplification" power feed? What do you tap in to??
>Plus it has a square base hole, How do I drill a square hole?????

Re: fuba antenna (fiorya)

since the FUBA is much shorter than a standard antenna, they amplified them so that it'd make up for the shorter length. as for the wiring, the GLi antenna has 2 wires, the second is for power. i needed to find a 12 V power supply (i tapped off the radio power wire and made sure i put a fuse along the wire..and the nut on the bottom of the base should create a good ground.
try to screw the new mast onto the old base and see if it works, it should. I personally went to the dealership(stupid me) to get the roofmount antenna. The parts guy was so enthusiastic about how i was keeping the second generation of dubs alive, he gave me the base and new mast for free. problem was that there was only one wire, the new FUBA's have the power built into the signal cable. as for wiring and parts. i went to the antennaworld.com website and got the correct adapters.
a Square hole is hard to drill...drill one hole and then carefully make it square with smaller bits...kinda like ream out the edges a little but be very careful. also, before you tighten the antenna base down, put some touchup paint around the bare metal so it doesn't rust if it gets wet.
i know the fuba's come with a gasket but i suggust sealing it with some silicone or some sealant to ensure water tightness...
hope this was helpful...
lemme know how it goes

Re: fuba antenna (fiorya)

a tip... put a piece of masking tape over the hole you intend to drill so you don't crack the paint, it sounds dumb but it works, also take good care of that seal because its not durable
the dealer sells the black rubber plug for the stock antenna for like $2.00 and you don;t even notice it

Re: fuba antenna (jettanick)

quote:

I want to say the back edge of the antenna base should be 4 inches from the window moulding, maybe 4.5 inches. It's been about 4 years since I've installed one. Measure twice, drill once. Make sure you "start" the hole by tapping a nail into the metal (not all the way, just enough to make a dent) that way the drill bit won't wander when starting to drill.
It really isn't that hard, just a little time consuming.

quote:

Yup, but be sure not to tap too hard. You really don't want to make a depression in the roof. Also, be sure to drill far enough forward. There is some heavy duty steel along the rear window frame that you won't be able to drill through. I installed my antenna about 4.5" forward I believe. You can measure diagonally from the window corners to make absolutely certain you are centered.

i did one on my car and i did it all for free

also make sure to run a lil beed of silicone around the base to make sure of no water leaks.
HTH.
