i have a mkIV and haven't posted in the mkII forums yet but i have a question regarding your generation.
have you guys ever heard of any sort of aftermarket airbags to install in a golf... for safety reasons, not to lower it. my coworker just purchased a mkII golf and is going to have to sell the car if there's no way to install airbags in it for his daughter's safety.
thanks in advance http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: aftermarket airbags (NDarabi)

LMAO tell you what, ill take that horribly dangerous, non airbag equipped car off of his hand for him.
[MKII's are LIFESAVERS, they WILL keep their owner alive in almost ANY circumstance... ]
BTW, it would really be FAR too big of a liability / safety issue to retrofit airbags to a vehicle never designed for them.
...would you know where to put the sensors, how much pressure to have the bag deploy at, etc?
....would you want to be liable when she accidentally hits a curb and the airbag explodes and breaks her nose?

all in good humor man, i just realized that i was starting to sound like a dick... didn't mean to.
but seriously, its NOT a good idea to try to retrofit an airbag system to these cars.
And, the airbag system DOESN'T really make the car the much safer anyway.
I do understand how parents are though. Thats why you see so many little girls driving around in shiny new [unreliable] cars. Daddy wouldn't even consider letting his daughter in a 20 year old car... because if it is old it must be a death trap, right? LOL

but, if airbags really are the main selling point, maybe he should get her a MK3... they have airbags, and still MOSTLY look like a Volkswagen.

Re: aftermarket airbags (golf198v3.0)

The mk2 was designed with crumple zones and for the passenger cabin to remain intact. Putting airbags into a car of this age will make it less safe. I've seen more people ejected from cars with airbags, but are not wearing their seatbelts. Airbags alone will not make any car more safe. They are a supplemental restraint system. Seatbelts, when worn and adjusted properly, are just fine in an mk2.
You should tell your friend to take the money he would send to retrofit airbags (if the system exists, it would be at least $2,000) and go to a defensive driving school like Skip Barber, Spring Mountain or Bob Bondurant Driving School. The lessons learned from the school will help his daughter not only be a better driver, but will teach her what it means to be driving around with a 2000 lbs + vehicle and why trying to take a turn at 50 mph is never a good idea.

If you need air bags, ABS, or traction control, you shouldn't have a liscense.

but accidents happen none-the-less.
and it's not always your fault, there are a lot of stupid people out there.
being ignorant of everyone around you, even if you're a good driver, is... ignorant.
