While doing some work today, I noticed that around the oil cooler it was a little wet with oil.
I know there is an upgrade for the oil cooler, but what is the deal with the stock cooler?
Does it need new seals/gaskets or does the unit just need to be replaced?
I don't have any coolant in the oil, just some oil on the outside.
MKIV VR, not sure if there is a difference from the MKIII
I also have some wetness between the engine and gear box, but I guess that is what happens at 152K miles.

there are 2 rubber orings for the cooler. Total cost for both if i remember correctly is less than $5. I replaced mine this summer because of the same reason. Rather easy fix as well.

Cool thanks. I searched and read about how the coolant can get in the oil, is that still a problem for the MKIV or is that only on the MKIII? Will the new seals prevent that or does the cooler itself go bad?

Is there a DIY tutorial for the ring replacement? Or is it pretty self-explanatory in the Bentley?

I think if you get under the car it should be pretty simple. I have a new crack pipe and Thermostat, so I will probably do all of them at once.
If you take the intake off, that may save you the trouble of removing the front end, my luck, probably not, but I have to take it off anyway to get the cams out so I'll try.

the oil filter housing uses 2 o rings to seal it to the block.. the oil cooler housing uses a single o ring to seal it to the block... and another to seal it to the oil cooler cover.... i would recommend replacing both seals while your in there....
its pretty straight forewards... you dont really need the bently... just drain the oil... unscrew the oil cooler... replace the 1 o-ring from the oil cooler to the block, and the 1 o ring from the oil cooler to the oil cooler cover....
hopefully this diagram will show you what you need to know about the oil cooler... #'s 6,7,5, and 8

and this one to show you the oil filter housing and its o-ring
