I did the same thing, but got a vortech also and sold it for a turbo. Depends what you want out of it, if you have the mod bug then I would say go turbo. You will end up there anyway. z-eng's aren't cheap, you could almost do a turbo (right) with the cost of a new one. Actually you could probably do a turbo for the cost of a new z. They go for over 4000 right???

I like mine a lot. You should check out the Forced Induction forum.

Re: Z-Engineering Supercharger (Kenji)

Yeah, the Z kit is expensive, but once you bolt it on....you have max power. No tinkering or tuning. That's why I bought it, and that is also why I sold it.
I wanted something more to play with, and a turbo was just that.

Re: Z-Engineering Supercharger (vausVR6)

Click on the thread in vausVR6's signature. It pretty much sums up the problems that a Vortech owner has to deal with. Vortech's are much more powerful if you can get the fueling issues worked out (nice numbers vaus, BTW).
Get the Z-kit if you will be satisfied with 210-230whp and want to bolt it on and forget about it.
Get the vortech if you have the patience (and resources) to work through the issues to get the big numbers!

Re: Z-Engineering Supercharger (graff48)

The good thing about the vortech kits now is that the fueling issues are finally being dealt with and soon there should be a very good solution (check my sig). The problem is that the "tuners" that put these kits together chose to disregard the fact that the stock fueling system was inadequate for 10psi

Even with the price of fixing the fueling, the vortech kit should come out to be about the same price as the Z and IMO the Z kit is overpriced for the power it produces. Yes guys are getting some descent numbers with cams and such... but the Z charger is limited in the amount of boost it can produce and therefore you're pretty much at the limit as far as power goes. With the Vortech you can get a smaller pulley + IC or water injection AND cams and put down some serious numbers. I should have some new numbers by the end of the summer

! When will the OBD1 chips be avalible do you know?

I really have no control over the OBD-I chip development. I think Dextrose is arranging a session with George to map an OBD-I chip. Otherwise it will take as long as it takes someone with an OBD-I Vortech setup to come up to Nor cali and pay George a visit

I see you live in San Diego, so do I http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I happen to have a Z charger on my 2000 GTI VR6. Why don't you come to one of our Get Togethers and I give you a ride. Check this link for the next Get Together: http://www.socalivw.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=6
and as far as I now Z-Eng is the only super charger out there for MKIV

Re: Z-Engineering Supercharger (RavinJetta)

I have one on my '92 corrado and love it. It was easy to install and now that my engine is up to spec (maintainance wise) it runs great. The car is really fun to drive. I admit that that a Z is not going to put up big numbers like a turbo setup or properly tuned vortech, but I think that if you want a True complete "bolt on" performance product with dependable power, the Z is the way to go because everything is engineered already. Another thing is that their tech support kicks butt. I think it's the practical approach to upping the performance.
Remember that yes the z is more expensive than other kits, but it's complete- your done and there's no hidden costs after getting this and that because you find out that your car is'nt running right after the fact. It sounds like from what I'm reading here and other places on the forum that when you purchase various turbo "kits" or Vortech "kits" that you've "only payed the entry fee and gotta spend more to go on the rides" What I mean is after getting the "kit" you need to buy extras to get it to work- which is fine if that's what you want, but for me this doesn't fly because these extras would put me way over my budget, plus kinda put me on my own to figure out a solution with fueling. What if you can't get the fueling right? You bought the kit knowing this so you're stuck.
The Z-engineeting altough not as powerful is the most dependable power you can add to a VW and since everything you need is provided by Z if you have a problem you just go to Z and they take care of it. I can't say that with the vortech or custom turbo since your peicing it together.
If your looking for ultimate power the price you will pay is more maintainance, more legwork finding parts to make it work and just simply more time a money. If that sounds like it's worth ii then don't get a Z, but if you simply want to go faster and be done with it then the Z is for you...
I write too much
