I'm doing a gas mileage check on my car right now...
Just wanted to know any tips on how to conserve gas and get better fuel economy.
Also wanted to know how you guys commonly calculate your MPG.
Thanks!

Re: Fuel Economy Test (GregoryI)

calculate your mpg by ... reseting your Trip Odometer and divide that by the # of gallons at your next fill up..

as for tips on how to conserve gas... I know this has all been said before,,
but, try not to rev over 5K, make sure you change your oil regularly, change your air filter regularly(or clean and recharge it if you have a K&N http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif ), and monitor and regulate your tire pressure...

28mpg daily, 32+ on trips on my own...

I get 28 with my 1.8T in mixed highway/city, with some (but not a lot) heavy-foot driving.

I also check my mpg a each fill-up. Like was sated before, divide your miles on that tank by the gallons you pumped in.
I was getting 30-32 with mixed driving when it was warmer, but it has since dropped a bit with the temperature. I almost broke 400 miles on a tank a while back.
I try to keep the revs under 3k. I have such a short commute to work that I barely get up to temp to stomp it. My water temp just barely reaches the 190 before I'm at work.

150 miles average to half tank

Don't rely on the gauge to be overly accurate.

Use the trip odo to record the distance between fueling. Use the gas receipt and a calculator (or Excel) and the distance on the trip odo to figure out fuel use per distance traveled:

miles / gallons = mpg
(liters / kilometers)*100 = L/100km

empty your trunk, air-up the tires, keep windows closed over 60mph, downshift - coast - and engine-brake instead of riding the brake pedal, 80-90% throttle at low revs, short-shift below 3000, skip gears, don't idle, use the best gas available, realize that ethanol blends return marginally less mileage, clean your windshield, wax, lower it, vote for Pedro.

Re: Fuel Economy Test (dubcity-vdub)

If you want the best economy, shift before the torque peak if at all possible.
The best I've gotten out of my 99.5 is 56.3. That tank I tried to not let the boost go over 10 PSI, and kept the revs below 2000 if I could help it. Driving normally... shifting at 3500 gives me 46 MPG.

Switched from a 2.0 to a VR about a year ago, more power's way more fun than more MPG!

Re: Fuel Economy Test (GregoryI)

Shift early
Keep it in high gear
Lay off the launches
Increase tire pressures
Lose weight
You can try some fuel injector cleaner. Don't know if it will help or not, but I definitely noticed a difference when I used it!

i upped my tire pressure to like 42psi all the way around on my 18" dunlop sportmaxx's adn it gave my like 40 more miles to the tank...but i was driving heavier than before so realistically it made a huge difference.
i always wondered wat was better: having low revs with lots of throttle or high revs with virtually no throttle?

engine-brake instead of riding the brake pedal

really??? wouldn't coasting imply that ur not using the engine?

coasting implies leaving the car in its current gear (usually 5th or 6th, yes?) and just letting off the gas. In a high gear, you won't get a lot of engine braking effect. Downshifting to a lower gear will help keep you out of the trunk of the car in front
